Terrorist try to buy cruise ship employee I.D.
Local Skagway, Alaska AM Radio Station

Posted on 08/12/2004 10:27:19 PM PDT by not2worry

I am presently on a cruise in Alaska. On the local AM Skagway station this AM it was broadcast that there is an ongoing investigation as to possible terriorist approaching cruise ship employees to buy their identification cards and board the ships. The U.S. Coast Guard is continuing an investigation. Skagway is a small port about 60 miles from Juneau, AK. Very scary, especially with sharing a boarder with Canada where their is a very large Muslim population.

Anyone in Alaska aware of this investigation?

We had the Coast Guard make an unannounced boarding of our ship. Could have been just a routine inspection, but was somewhat unnerving after hearing the broadcast on my portable radio.

I found something at a local Skagway paper, but it's dated

"FBI investigates cruise ship ID offer "
Security heightened with July 1 directives

By GREY HUDDLESTON

FBI Special Agent Eric Gonzalez has confirmed that the agency is investigating a potential July 7 cruise ship security breach in Skagway.

Gonzalez said the agency received a tip that two individuals in town were attempting to purchase identification cards from cruise ship crew members, and launched an investigation.

“This is certainly unusual, so we’re taking it very seriously and investigating,” said Gonzalez.

The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Anchorage-based Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), a cooperative effort between city, state and federal law enforcement officials.

Gonzalez said the JTTF is working with the Skagway Police Department to investigate.

Police Chief Dennis Spurrier declined to comment on the incident. “We can’t officially release any information, because the investigation is still under way,” he said.
Currently no arrests have been made.

The investigation comes as security on the docks has been heightened under a new directive from the Department of Homeland Security that went in place July 1.

Cruise Line Agencies has hired extra staff to run checks on all buses coming onto the Railroad Dock, as well as making routine dock patrols and checking identification on all docks.

Alaska for a Terrorist would be a good one for them, because of the cold water.

Very scary, especially with sharing a boarder with Canada where their is a very large Muslim population.

That can be taken care of with a few ICBMs - no?

"Very scary, especially with sharing a boarder with Canada where their is a very large Muslim population"

There are only 2 surface ways across the AK - Canada/BC Border.
1. The ALCAN highway.
2. Via snowmobile a little further north - but you have to have fuel caches set up to do it. And everyone knows everyone else up there - so a stranger would stick out.

Anything else is certain death or an expedition so large it would be evident by satellite.

That is some serious rough remote country.

One mistake - you are gone. You don't even have to make a mistake - wrong place - wrong time - buy - buy.

We have lost tourist within Anchorage city limits - only to be found next thaw.
