SHE made her name helping couples with their sex lives. But now Ruth Westheimer, the sexologist better known to the world as Dr Ruth, is asking for help finding love herself.
The therapist, 76, twice divorced and once widowed, has been touring Israel in search of a new partner and has enrolled the help of the nations television chat shows and radio phone-ins in her search for happiness.
Her quest for a new partner has seen her waltzing to French music, dining on fish by the Mediterranean and sipping coffee in Tel Aviv cafes.
And although one date this week did not set off fireworks, she had high hopes for another meeting last night.
"I want to show the world that even though I am 76, I do not give up," Westheimer said at her Tel Aviv hotel. "You should make sure that you are out there ... dont be desperate, do something you like."
Westheimer, who made a name for herself with radio and television advice programmes about sex, has made no secret about her intentions.
She has appeared on several shows during her current three-week visit to Israel, drawing flirtations from a number of callers. She quickly dismissed one man who admitted he was married.
Westheimer said her chosen man should be over 65, interesting, Jewish, have a sense of humour and joie de vivre. He does not have to have money, nor does he have to be as "energetic crazy" as she is.
The man should also have interests in life, although they do not have to be the same as hers, like chess, she said.
On a blind date on Tuesday night, Westheimer danced two waltzes before treating her evenings date to a fish dinner in the romantic Old City of Jaffa in Tel Aviv.
But she still has not found the right man, she said. Last night she was due to have coffee with another Israeli man, she said.
As part of her visit, Westheimer met a famous Jerusalem rabbi, expecting to receive a special blessing to aid her in her quest. But Rabbi David Batzri only offers blessings to those who have already found their matches, she said.
The rabbi did give her information for a course on the Jewish family that she teaches at Princeton University, Westheimer said. Israeli society, like the United States, has become much more open to discussing sex in recent decades, she said.
Westheimer has married and divorced twice, and her third husband died seven years ago. The diminutive author of 27 books said the 11 September terror attacks taught her the value of a life partner.
Westheimer, a German native, was saved from the Holocaust when her parents sent her, at the age of ten, to a Swiss school.
Much of her family perished in the war but Westheimer emigrated to Israel as a teenager and was later seriously wounded fighting in countrys war of independence.
She said she visits Israel every year since it was the only country that would take her in after the Second World War.
Westheimer moved to the United States in 1956 and got her doctorate on the interdisciplinary study of the family at Columbia University. She started her first radio call-in show in New York in 1980. She currently rlives in New York City.
Ping!
Perhaps she could use some advice from Dr. Laura.
Here, I'll help you out: "I'd do 'er"

So.. she's looking for her 4th "life" partner?
Aw c'mon Ivan, you're single, aren't you?
Actually, my wife says Dr. Ruth should have a gay marriage with that sex show host from the Oxygen network, who she (my wife) refers to as "that old whore."
I like Robin William's remark about Dr. Ruth: "Why are people going to this women for advice on oral sex when she obviously doesn't eat pork?"
I certainly never pictured her as a warrior. Good for her.
What, you mean the US now gets Dr. Sue Johanssen? She's been a fixture on the Women's Television Network in Canada for years now, with a sex phone-in show on Sunday nights. It's usually hilarious to listen to some of the clueless idiots who call in, but it gets pretty creepy when she goes into explicit detail about various acts and body parts.
Mmmm, you're never too old to want some companionship?
here are a few words:
"Geesh... she's still alive? And she's ONLY 76?????"
"Dr. Ruth. A women trying to give advice on oral sex, when you know she doesn't eat pork. WARNING!" --- Robin Williams
You beat me to it. He said that on his Carnegie Hall special back in, I think, 87.
I can't watch that show as I fear it will turn me off to all future sex activity. I get odd visuals whenever Ms. Johansen goes into descriptions of...YEECH!
This is almost as funny as the earlier post about Gary Coleman receiving 14k votes in California.
How much money has she got? If Tah-Ray-Zuh dumps Johnny Gigilo he might be interested.
She and Dr. Laura meeting, would result in a gigantic matter-antimatter explosion.
Hey, maybe that's what happened to McGreevey...

Maybe she needs to go to one of those "cuddle parties."
