New Jersey Governor James McGreevey resigned from office Thursday, stating, "I am a gay American."
McGreevey spoke at a press conference in Trenton, New Jersey, Thursday afternoon (August 12), following allegations of corruption made by several of his political aides. The governor, who had served two years of his term, cited a "consensual affair with another man."
With his wife standing by his side, McGreevey announced his homosexuality. "From my early days in school until the present day," he said, "I noticed something that separated me from others."
"I have grappled with my own identity," McGreevey continued, describing how he struggled to align himself with what he felt were values that would make him part of a "traditional community."
"My truth is," he said, "that I am a gay American."
The governor then acknowledged his extramarital affair: "It was wrong, it was foolish, it was unacceptable," he said. "Let me be clear," the governor continued, "I accept total and full responsibility for my actions. However, I am required to do now, to do what is right, to correct the consequences of my actions and to be truthful to my loved ones, my friends and my family, and also, to myself."
Following the announcements of his homosexuality and extramarital affair, the governor explained that he felt the appropriate course of action was resignation.
"I am very proud of the things we have accomplished during this administration," McGreevey concluded, "and I want to thank humbly the citizens of the state of New Jersey for the privilege ... to govern."
McGreevey, who was elected the 51st governor of New Jersey on November 6, 2001, will leave office on November 15. His term would have run until January 17, 2006.
Under the state constitution, his successor will be Richard Codey, the current president of the state senate.

Butt that's just my opinion.
If you don't care about my sentiments regarding the issue...that's fine, I haven't asked you to.
I simply posted them...my own sentiments.
Since McGreevey paid off his gay lover with a job, he's really a buy-sexual.
McGreevey wraps his pecker in the flag.
Jim McGreevey thinks your butt is cute too Jeff.
When was the Swiftboat story *on* the front page?
What will happen next? Tune in to Will & Grace at 9:00 to find out.
barf!
Ouch! How embarrassing...believe it or not, that was a purely unitentional typo on my part.
My guess is that McGreevey's next career will be as the Episcopal Bishop of New Jersey. His life story closely resembles the current Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire's.
McGreevey will be back on the stump in no time !
Without a doubt, this story is unrelated to bush of any kind ...
LOOKS LIKE MCGREEVEY WILL BE JOHN KERRY'S
SEC. OF DEFENSE.
You know....because he can lead Kerry's "SENSITIVE" war on terror.
No offense Jeff. I was reffering to the story, not your sentinments...
Hey, wait a minute, didn't McGreevey steal that from George Carlin?
There is no bi imo. If you take it in the you-know-what, you're gay.
My thought is that this is a great bookend to the California Supreme Court invalidating the San Francisco "gay marriages." McGreevey's destruction of his family is an excellent example of why gay marriage, and the societal endorsement of homosexuality, threatens traditional marriage.
As society has stopped stigmatizing homosexuality and adultery, we see people who were struggling to maintain traditional marriage feeling "free" to destroy their families. Far from accepting deviance, we should buckle down and reinstate society's stigmas.
Im surprised you haven't been banned you yet, WakeUpAnd Vote "Since Aug 2, 2004"
You liberals love the word "wake up," don't you? I see it from liberal lurkers all the time.
