Microsoft offers disabled SP2 download

Customers can delay installation of service pack to provide time for validation and testing

Microsoft Corp. is letting customers disable installation of SP2 until they are ready to deal with the multitude of issues it brings.

Users, largely expected to be corporates, can prevent the installation of the newly minted XP service pack while permitting the installation of all other automatic OS updates.

The idea behind it is that smaller organizations may find that the update process overwhelms their resources, whether download bandwidth, or technical staff who will have to manage the fall-out of a massive OS update dropping into most users' machines

The move follows IBM Corp.'s instruction to its employees not to install SP2.

I think I'll stick with the known issues of Win98.

Microsoft said they would make a SP2 CD available. Is there a website or an address we can go to to request the CD?

"Microsoft offers disabled SP2 download"

Well, the disabled should be very happy about this news.

So....does this mean anything to the individual user like me, who uses XP Professional? What do I do? Disable something?

The download does a number of things, the main one the user will notice is that it enables the included firewall in XP.

It's easy to disable the firewall, if you want. This is mostly security stuff.

Been testing the SP here at work and it definitely has the capacity to cut down on spyware. I like it so far.

The Group Policy setting mentioned only disables the SP download for 120 days, BTW...after that, your automatic updates will pull it down and install it. It's a big critter...266 megs.

And here I was thinking about upgrading to a new computer and running XP.

I've found XP to crash a lot less than 98SE. But meticulously keeping up with all the security patches and antiviral protection is a MUST.

It also helps not to use MSIE (Mozilla Firefox instead).

I completely love XP. So much better than the old archetecture of 98 and ME. The best thing I like about XP is the way it handles system resources. Only uses what it needs at any given time. I have had 0 problems with XP. However, I do keep up to date with my maintance (patches, firewalls, and various protection software).

I think I'll stick with Linux. At least its bug fixes actually fix the bugs rather than break things and make things worse...

Yep. Been playing neverwinter nights on my Redhat Box and am so happy with it I feel like I did when I got my first pc and started playing games on it. But this time it doesn't crash, is so fast it's rediculous and I'm even considering a Fedora install to replace XP on my other Box at this point. Already have the install set, just tryin to decide when to do it.
