Skinner (La Dems) seeks to disqualify Alexander for switching parties

Just heard on WTIX. Mike Skinner, head of the La Democratic Party is seeking to disqualify Rodney Alexander from the November ballot as retribution for switching parties.

No details on what legal basis he has to seek such an action. "Sour Grapes" isn't part of the Louisiana Election Code.

TOPICS: US: Louisiana
KEYWORDS: rodneyalexander
Will update as this develops.

Details about the switch and how he qualified to run in the current election?

Rodney Alexander will win since his district is overwhelmingly conservative.

Skinner is an attorney in Lafayette, Louisiana. Just another example of trial lawyer involvement in politics. If you can't win at the ballot box, take it to the courts. Shameful!

On 8/4 he filed to run for reelection with the LA SoS office as a Dem. Two days later, about 15 minutes before the final filing deadline, he re-filed to run as a Republican.

Sneaky, I'll admit. But when you're delaing with b@stards like the Dems, you don't play by Marquis of Queensbury rules.

I didn't hear all that kind of grumbling when Jumpin Jim did his thing.

So he'll be running against himself?

On C-Span...they had Rep. Menendez from the democrats angrily talking about this. I thought this was quite funny coming from a Rep from New Jersey years after the Torricelli debacle.

No, LA's primaries are open-anyone can run in them. There was already another Dem and one Republican running against him.

The difference is, the guy is running for re-election as a member of the party he switched to. Also, Jumpin' Jim Jeffords didn't switch parties per se - he ran as a Republican, then caucused with the 'rats after the election.

Big difference.

I know Jumpin' Jim gets brought up, but here's a better example. Remember Congressman Michael Forbes? He switched from the Republicans to the Democratic Party in 1999. Back then the Democrats were dancing for joy. I didn't read of any talk of disloyalty from the Democrats back then.

Yes, and it was a slimy move, regardless of what party had done it. I think it's not slimy if you are going to switch parties if you do it in such a way that you are running for re-election as a member of the new party. If that makes any sense...

Of course not. It's only right when they do something. But I think those days are coming to an end with the downfall of what the TRUE Democratic party used to stand for.
