Shame On The Swift Boat Veterans For Bush (Jim Rassmann Character Witness Alert)
Opinionjournal.com ^ | 08/10/04 | Jim Rassmann

Shame on the Swift Boat Veterans for Bush John Kerry saved my life. Now his heroism is being questioned.

Jim Rassmann

Does this strategy of attacking combat Vietnam veterans sound familiar? In 2000, a similar Republican smear campaign was launched against Sen. McCain. In fact, the very same communications group, Spaeth Communications, that placed ads against John McCain in 2000 is involved in these vicious attacks against John Kerry. Texas Republican donors with close ties to George W. Bush and Karl Rove crafted this "dishonest and dishonorable" ad. Their new charges are false; their stories are fabricated, made up by people who did not serve with Kerry in Vietnam. They insult and defame all of us who served in Vietnam. But when the noise and fog of their distortions and lies have cleared, a man who volunteered to serve his country, a man who showed up for duty when his country called, a man to whom the United States Navy awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts, will stand tall and proud. Ultimately, the American people will judge these Swift Boat Veterans for Bush and their accusations. Americans are tired of smear campaigns against those who volunteered to wear the uniform. Swift Boat Veterans for Bush should hang their heads in shame.

Mr. Rassmann, a retired lieutenant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, served with the U.S. Army 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam 1968-69.

John F*ckin's got a Republican character witness to testify on behalf of his courage and patriotism. By someone who's life Kerry saved. Does that discredit the Swift Boat Vets charges? You be the judge.

It's certainly possible that Rossman is right about Kerry saving his life and that the Swift Boat Veterans are right about their claims as well. What's your point?

Funny, all the information backs up the Swift Boaters. I have yet to see one of their claims refuted.

This would all be solved if Kerry would just RELEASE HIS RECORDS.

Gee, I really wanted to hear "James" tell his story again.

I am not so sure he could tell the same story today as he told in Iowa this past January. This past week he was complaining about memory problems.

This guy IMO is just as phony as JFKerry.

I remember he said he had to read Brinkley's book on JFKerry to see "if" he was really in it....

Kerry could simply release all of his military and medical records. What's the problem?

How exactly did Rassmann come to "strap hang" on Kerry's boat for five days, anyway? Where was his assigned SF unit? Why wasn't he there? Was this 5 day hiatus an official mission, or just a couple of buds hanging out?

I'm struck at his claiming to be a Republican. I suppose its just a coincidence and his defense of Kerry is unbiased and non-partisan. Except for one problem. I don't see how any one CANNOT owe a debt to the person who saved them. So it stands to figure Rassmann is repaying his debt to Kerry. I do agree he hasn't refuted the Swift Boat Vets charges and they're still stalking his friend's campaign. Nice try in killing the messenger though.

How many hours did Rassmussen spend with Kerry before the 2004?

You're darn right Kerry may have saved his life - when Kerry paniced, gunned the boat and sped away, poor 'ol Rassman landed on his butt in the water and left him for dead. Later, lucky for Rassman, Kerry came back, once the coast was clear. Not only saved his life but turned the story of what might have been a career ender into a great & grandeous tale worthy of John Kerry himself! ROFLMAO

They went to war and fought under the American flag.

They are entitled to their opinion, and despite the disapproval of Susan Estrich and Bill O'Reilly, and despite John McCain's best constitution-smashing legislative efforts, they are still allowed to air those opinions.

For a couple more weeks anyway.

I, for one, welcome their input.

Someone needs to let Rassmann know that its possible to be brave while at the same time being a liar.

Actually the Big Lie here is that Bush similiarly attacked McCain's Military record in the South Carolina Primary.

It never happened, but Rassmann says he did or at least that some organization supposibly tied to Bush did.

Winning a purple heart for scratching your shin while falling out of the boat isn't really something you'd be proud of now... is it?

It's like the phantom claims that the GOP questioned Max Cleland's "patriotism."

There is not a single human being on this planet or any other that can produce evidence of that charge, but it happened anyway.

We should all just shut up and know it.

You don't know the facts. In any case, the public should demand that Kerry release ALL of his militarey and medical records.

That should swiftly bring this controversy to a close.
