Bush: Raise (Immigration) Limit for Mexico
The Washington Times ^ | 08-07-2004 | Bill Sammon

Posted on 08/07/2004 2:27:23 PM PDT by NewRomeTacitus

President Bush yesterday called on Congress to increase the number of Mexican immigrants allowed into the United States.

"I support raising the quotas on certain population groups, like the Mexican nationals, on who can become a citizen. In order to solve the logjam for citizenship, Congress has got to raise the quotas."

Having long sought to grant legal status to illegal aliens from Mexico, the president said yesterday that the only way to enact his plan is to allocate more legal-immigration slots to Mexicans.

"The issue there is whether or not people automatically get to step in the front of the line when it comes to citizenship," he said. "I don't think they should. I think those who have been waiting in line to be a citizen ought to be allowed to keep that priority in line."

Mr. Bush did not explain how non-Mexican applicants for U.S. residency would keep their place in line if the quota for Mexican immigrants is enlarged. Nor did he quantify his proposed enlargement for Mexicans, who already far outnumber immigrants from every other nation.

The president's plan to relax immigration rules, which is unpopular among many conservatives, entails granting legal status to millions of Mexicans who break the law to enter the United States. Mr. Bush shuns the term "amnesty," preferring to call it the matching of "willing workers with willing employers."

"People ought to be allowed to be here legally to work. That's what I believe. This will help bring people out of the shadows of our society. This will help, kind of, legalize a system that takes place every day, without employers...or employees feeling like they're going to be arrested, subjected to fines," he added.

What is the goal of Bush in this? Does he really care so little about what the American people want? Is he trying to lose votes from Americans just for a few more votes from Mexican citizens? I think anyone who knows the life of Silvestre Reyes or much about the border knows why he's in Congress, who put him there, and what issue made him famous and popular enough to get elected.

So, who ya gonna vote for?

Probably Tancredo, even though doing so is tantamount to voting for Kerry.

"The Mexican elite need even higher levels of people leaving or their corrupt system is in danger of toppling."

And the American elite wants to squeeze a few dollars more out of the "cost" of labor. Tacit open-borders is a wage-depressing policy.

If the Mexicans coming over the border were CFO's and journalists to take jobs here, the border would be shut immediately.

This is the final straw. I cannot vote for this man.

Funny thing is, both the Repub and Demo elites think open borders and amnesties are ways to get the votes of Hispanic citizens. Well, that's what they here from the ethnic front groups subsidized by the cheap labor lobbies, the only "ethnics" the elites probably meet.

Because the previous poster didn't take the time to neatly edit the article to include all the President's comments so they may be seen without going to the link, that's why.

That's a poppycock excuse to waste FReeper's time. Nobody complained on the original thread about Bush's comments not being shown. Just respond to the original thread, and save poor Jim some much-needed bandwidth. With the way the election's going he's probably got gerbils running the wheels to provide power.

which they believe is theirs exclusively

Of course it is! The Pope gave it to them - including Tejas and California and everything north to the pole - in 1495!

Don't you remember?!

Please reconsider and vote for Bush. You have to remember that any proposal HAS to go through Congress. A lot of Congressmen, especially in border states such as AZ and TX are adamantly opposed to illegals and have received tons of complaints from their constituents.

Writing-in Tancredo doesn't do squat but get Ketchup boy elected, who'll REALLY throw open the borders.

Yes --- which is why many hispanics won't vote for Bush and his open borders --- or did everyone forget who Cesar Chavez and the United Farmworkers Union was and why they were against open borders and unlimited immigration from Mexico. Hispanics in the USA are not for open borders --- except the power elites who want voters an power and the Aztlaners who want Communism.

If it wasn't for the war on terrorism and the supreme court apointments I just might not vote for W. I hope this is the last Bush Presidency!

I didn't mean I would vote for Tancredo; I was answering the question posed to the other FReeper (Who are you going to vote for?).

I'll vote for Bush despite his pandering to ILLEGALS and Vicente Fox. Not because I want to, but because he's our only chance of defeating Kerry.

What also seems strange is Vicente Fox doesn't seem to be getting much help from this issue in Mexico either --- his party lost the July election in Chihuahua. And it looks like his wife of almost 3 years isn't going to run for president after all.

First of all, this is a private Forum that's subject to rules and agreements of Jim Robinson and FR. The moderators have posted a vanity explaining the need to cut back on duplicate and vanity postings. Apparently, you didn't get the memo.

I've discussed FR's capacity with the moderators because I am indeed concerned about resources. I have "read the memo" and wouldn't have reposted the article if I didn't believe it couldn't have been presented better. I'm not in the habit of reposting anything and keep my postings to a minimum. Where you get the condescending "holding hands" reference is beyond me, as I only ping people who maintain an interest in specific subjects whose opinions I respect. You do not qualify on those counts.

Had you bothered to check my "In Forum" history before attacking me you would know I do not agree with the President's failure to safeguard our country from the deluge of illegals and the terrorists who may be sneaking in with them. You go beyond the bounds of common civility and only demean yourself when you deride my intelligence and articulation. Have a better day.

I suspect he will not really try to change immigration policies.

I just checked --- and apparently that's what they're saying in Mexico ---"“No creo que el error haya sido intencional. El está diciendo una cosa y haciendo otra, y el discurso de hoy se agrega al misterio sobre lo que la Casa Blanca va a hacer sobre inmigración”, afirmó.

Well, not exactly. The ads are in Spanish, but they are running in the southwest states. President Bush is trying to appeal to Hispanic citizens who can vote, and who probably have friends and relatives in Mexico who would like to become U.S. citizens. Of course I'm sure he would avoid emphasizing this issue in English language ads in other areas of the U.S. It does have an unpleasant air of sneaking. I'm a bit disappointed in this strategy, and on top of that I think it might endanger his core constituency.

It is true as another Freeper pointed out that President Bush can't make a change in immigration policies. It would require legislative action. I guess the real question is, would President Bush put the weight of his office truly behind such a change, or is it just campaign talk? What are his real beliefs on this subject? I do not know.

YOU know I sometimes wish that we let the left go far enough that they would hang themselves, lets just get the civil war that is brewing in this country on the road ,sometimes I wish it sometimes I dont ,but no president wants to change things, and make things right, AMERICA GETS THE SCREWS EVERYTIME.

Well, Fox will get his million dollar pension early.

I think his party lost the election for Mayor of Tijuana too.

5 million dollar pension --- ex presidents of Mexico make 10 times as much as do ex presidents of the USA.
