"Kings in Colonial Heights VA." We used to eat there a lot when I was growing up. I don't think it held a candle to Gene's, though....also in Colonial Heights.

"Can't find that style of cooking anywhere here" I suffered that problem all the years I lived in Colorado. Whenever I'd come back home for a visit, I'd eat practically nothing but barbecue. What part of Colorado are you in? Red, Hot and Blue is the closest thing to southern barbecue you'll find out there, and it was fairly new when I left. They have one in Colorado Springs on North Academy Blvd. I don't know if there are others. I simply cannot abide that sweet ketchup sauce they call barbecue sauce in Colorado, and most of them wouldn't know a pig if it came up and introduced itself.

"You know I've eaten at WHole Hog - it's good." Of course I know YOU have. I was addressing that particular part to OSHA. Sorry for the misunderstanding. These threads make me SO hungry. I was up in Eureka Springs yesterday. I tried a new place there. Ordered a barbecue. It sucked. Shoulda gone to Bubba's.

Famous Daves in Minnesota is really good, HOWEVER, since MN passed a CCW they have posted signs at their doors 'BANNING GUNS' on their premises. I no longer go there as I am CCW permit holder.

"Clemm's, San Diego, CA."
Heading on vacation to San Diego this weekend; where is Clemm's located? Anywhere near Old Town?

Clemm's is in La Jolla. I can't give you directions since I haven't lived there for a long time. It's easy to find, though since it's on a main drag.

What do you think of Firehouse in JC? Very unexceptional - reminds me of a Tony Roma's, which could not make it in JC - a town that eats out a LOT!
Firehouse gets a lot of business, though; there is no accounting for taste.

On further reflection it is "Clays", not Clemms. Sorry for the confusion.

The 'best' BBQ is what your eating at the moment. If you can't have it - who cares if it's 'better'.

Maurice Bessinger BBQ, with restaurants around the Columbia, SC area, makes the best BBQ and BBQ sauce around.
He's also INCREDIBLEY politically incorrect.

Southside got better when they moved to the HWY from downtown Elgin. Sometimes when a joint moves they lose something but not this time.

Just got your ping.
I went to a BBQ taste-test at Mitchell's a few weeks ago.
NC A&T was doing a comparison of factory-raised pork vs. small scale farmers... GREAT stuff!

I took a little time away from FR for a few weeks, but I'm back in action.
During my little break, I found a new smoker. It's a beauty built on an old truck chassis with a huge propane tank welded to the frame. She pulls like a jewel, very heavy duty. I'm going to mount a firewood box and supply cabinet on the tongue, maybe sandblast and repaint (but old smokers look great, too).
BBQ is religion on FR and this thread has a lot of praise! Amen!

Sounds great! Please post some pics.
(oh yeah, and welcome back!)
