Kerry Faults Bush's Delay at School After 9/11 News
The LA Times ^ | August 6, 2004 | Michael Finnegan

Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry on Thursday questioned President Bush's seven-minute delay in leaving a Florida classroom after learning of the World Trade Center attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

"Had I been reading to children and had my top aide whispered in my ear, 'America is under attack,' I would have told those kids very politely and nicely that the president of the United States had something that he needed to attend to," Kerry said.

The remarks by the Massachusetts senator — his first on the campaign trail about Bush's initial reaction to the terrorist assault — were in response to a question at a minority journalists conference in Washington. And Kerry's effort to cast himself as more decisive than the president led Bush's campaign to deploy former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani to swipe back at him.

"John Kerry must be frustrated in his campaign if he is armchair quarterbacking, based on cues from Michael Moore," Giuliani said in a statement released by Bush's campaign.

Teresa Heinz Kerry agreed with her husband's accusation that Bush misled Americans in the run-up to war.

"You cannot solve problems by throwing stones," she told a cluster of listeners from a perch on the caboose. "And you cannot solve problems by telling lies, and you cannot solve problems by wishing ill to other people. The only way you solve problems is by holding hands and talking about it, and that's what we want to do in this country."

I know this has been posted on FR a bunch of times already, but it's worth pointing out: Kerry and other high-ranking Dems sat dumbfounded for 40 minutes after the second plane hit the tower. Kerry himself, on Larry King Live, said none of them "could think."

John Kerry is a liar, and is using 9/11 to campaign in an extremely negative manner. He just gave up his right to complain about how Bush might use 9/11 "politically" (as if the proper response to 9/11 is to forget it ever happened!)

I stole this from another thread. Feel free to forward this to the LA Times in the form of a Letter To The Editor.

As is always the case with Kerry, however, it gets worse than that. It turns out that on the morning of September 11, Kerry did not, like Bush, delay acting for a mere five minutes, he delayed acting for 40 minutes. Here is Kerry’s reply on July 8 to Larry King who asked him what he was doing on September 11th:

I was in the Capitol. We’d just had a meeting—we’d just come into a leadership meeting in Tom Daschle’s office, looking out at the Capitol. And as I came in, Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid were standing there, and we watched the second plane come in to the building. And we shortly thereafter sat down at the table and then we just realized nobody could think, and then boom, right behind us, we saw the cloud of explosion at the Pentagon. And then word came from the White House, they were evacuating, and we were to evacuate, and so we immediately began the evacuation.

The dork man doesn't understand children.

To a child, there's nothing more frightening than to see an adult nervous or scared. If Kerry would have taken off in the middle of a story for urgent business, their little brains wouldn't understand what could be more important than a story unless it's an emergency. He would have frightened them.

Bush did the right thing. He looked out for the kids in that room.

Unbelievable. And Teresa saying the answer is to hold hands and talk about it. Like that would work with the terrorists.

I agree. It's not like his people in the administration weren't taking care of it by issuing shootdown orders and the like.

The only way you solve problems is by holding hands and talking about it, and that's what we want to do in this country."

There comes a time, when we hear a certain call When the world must come together as one There are people dying, and it's time to lend a hand. To life the greatest gift of all We can't go on, pretending day by day That someone somewhere will soon make a change We are all part of God's great big family And the truth, you know that love is all we need We are the world, we are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day so let's start giving There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives It's true, we'll make a better day just you and me. Send them your heart, so they'll know that someone cares And their lives will be stronger and free As God has shown us, by turning stones to bread. So that we all must lend a helping hand. We are the world...... When you're down and out There seems no hope at all But if you just believe there's no way we can fall Well, well, well, well, let's realise That a change can only come When we stand together as one We are the world......

On 9/11, Kerry froze. He was so scared, he couldn't move.
Kerry is a dork, and certainly not presidential material.

Alrighty then....

Vote Kerry because he wouldn't have delayed a small classroom for 7 minutes during a time of crisis when a couple hundred people died....

That just totally changes my mind of voting for Bush...

In the time wasted by Bush, continuing to read to the children, Kerry could have rushed off and put on his Super Kerryman suit.

Kerry doesn't understand Incident Command System - the very core of emergency management.

Nah. Kerry was scared for the country because Bush was President at the time and feared what Bush might do. {/sarcasm} {/this weekend's DNC talking points}

Bush wasn't reading to the children, The teacher was. The time was not 7 minutes, but 5 minutes as Bush waited for more information to move up to him.

Bush needs to sit Kerry down and read him that story. If he has any questions, he can raise his hand and Bush will be happy to answer them for him.

I'm sure sKerry would have used those seven minutes to his full advantage. First order of business? Why a photo-op of course. His nickname in Massachusetts is Liveshot.

First of all, you'd have to wake those poor kids up. And why would you be interrupting a story to talk about the President? That's just plain creepy.

As a parent of a young child, the events unfolding that day were terrifying. If President Bush had behaved any differently..ie..like Kerry states he would have..the children would have immediately have gotten upset and scared. Kids take their cues from adults. President Bush stayed calm and in control. That's what is needed in a time of crisis..not panic.

You betcha Kerry would have handled the situation differently. He would have immediately jumped up, left the kiddies, gathered the press and announced "I served in Vietnam!!!"
