Briton 'had Gulf battle plans and links to US navy mole'

A Briton who appeared in court in London yesterday on extradition charges allegedly was in possession of US navy battle plans and had contacts with an apparent Islamist spy within the service.

American authorities claim that Babar Ahmad, 30, ran a terrorist fundraising and recruiting agency on the internet, much of it on behalf of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Two members of Babar Ahmad's family leave the court

Ahmad, who appeared at Bow Street magistrate's court, was told his extradition was being sought by the Americans on two counts of using websites to solicit donations in the US to fund terrorism in Chechnya and Afghanistan. On the same dates - between 1998 and Feb 19 2001 and from then until the end of 2003 - he was also accused of agreeing to solicit donations in America to fund terrorism.

Authorities in Connecticut yesterday unsealed a 31-page indictment against Ahmad. Federal prosecutors said the investigation had spread to include his possible ties to an Islamist traitor serving aboard a US vessel.

The "highly sensitive" investigation" was triggered by the alleged discovery by Scotland Yard officers in a raid on Ahmad's home last December.

They allegedly found a computer disk containing classified descriptions of planned movements of a battle group in the Straits of Hormuz, off Iran, and offering guidance on how best to attack individual ships.

Kevin O'Connor, a federal prosecutor, claimed the detailed plans for the battle group appeared to have been sent in early April 2001, detailing where the ships would be on April 29, 2001.

The plans allegedly amounted to a blueprint on how to attack US warships.

The disk included the battle group's planned movements on that day, a drawing of the group's formation, and the names of individual ships and where they would be in that formation.

Carolina Guiloff, Ahmad's lawyer, made no application for bail.

That there are moles in the US military should not come as a surprise. It is a logical outcome of political correctness run amok.

Why do I have a vision of the US sailor kicking off the contact by sending an email: "I am the yeoman for the late Admiral Adam Bokomo, who was Commander-in-Chief of US Naval Forces Europe at the time of his untimely death. In the course of disposing of Admiral's personal effects, I came across diverted OPTAR funds in the amount of $156,000,000 US. I urgently need your assistance in liquidating these accounts..."

I wonder if we'll hear more about the identity of the mole. I'd like to hear that he's been arrested...but maybe he'll just be removed quietly so we don't have any claims that we are picking on Muslims. Apparently, our not wanting to be killed by them qualifies as "picking on" them.

Also - it occurs to me that this person must have been fairly highly placed. I can't imagine that the average swabbie would have access to the information on the disk.

Yup. I've seen nothing about an espionage case in the Navy. And the FBI covering the disloyalty of its translators...

We have to take the attitude that any moslem not actively porfessing to be against the terrorists is likely to sympathize with them.

i seriously doubt if any westerner would work for these ragheads, since they stand againt every western value.

I don't believe a westerner would ever work for these ragheads. It would have to be a muslim.

Serious stuff, but why would he be interested in "OLD" movement of battle group plans?

Do they get repeated?

"World Oil Transit Chokepoints"

Yup. I travelled many of these in my younger days. I think Bush is wise to refill the SPR, there's bigger problems on the horizon.

Everyone is worried about the Strait of Malacca these days. Ninety percent of Japans oil, 60 % of global commerce uses that strait to get goods from the Indian Ocean to the China Sea

There are a few "congress critters" that would have to be excluded!!!! I would start on the "INTEL" and Armed Services Committee!!!!

I think you are asking the wrong question, think about it from a different direction.... WHO was suppose to be president in April 2001?????

They don't have to be ragheads. I remember many years ago a Black muslim who was a two striper claimed that muslims would be attacking the US some day. This was about 1993 or so and I remember arguing with him. I've always wonder what happened to him and if he ever stayed in or got out?

The military has it's little small world and groups just like the rest of America and sometimes they don't really like the rest of us.

I totally agree, however, when you go to kill a "SNAKE" you cut off the head. These at this level are the "workers" not the planners.
