Republicans' Dishonorable Charge (FR/ FRN mention: CONASON ALERT)
Salon ^ | 8/5/2004 | Joe Conason

Posted on 08/06/2004 7:16:23 AM PDT by diotima

"Dishonest and dishonorable" is how John McCain described the attack ad now appearing on television in several swing states, courtesy of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Dishonest because the men who appear in the ad make false claims about John Kerry's wartime conduct and decorations. Dishonorable because these men have waited three decades to publicize their slurs, with partisan motives, during a presidential campaign.

**********SNIP SNIP SNIP********************

The hired help employed by the Swift Vets committee is thoroughly partisan, too. Aside from Spaeth and Thomas Rupprath, the private detective she recommended to provide research services, the group's IRS filing names several experienced Washington political operatives. The June 30 filing shows payments to Robert A. Hahn, a right-wing Internet activist and Web designer who also runs something called the Free Republic Network (apparently an affiliate of the extremist Free Republic Web site); and to Tom Wyld, a Navy veteran and former director of public relations for the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, the lobbying arm of the National Rifle Association.

The White House has deniability, to be sure, if charged with complicity in this campaign. The question is whether its deniability is plausible -- or risible.

As for the accuracy of the Republican veterans' accusations, they can be tested against the testimony of the men who served under Kerry's command -- all of whom but one have repeatedly endorsed his courage, his decency, and his candidacy. Denigration of Kerry's record should also be measured against the sterling evaluations that he received during the actual time of his service, including by Adm. Roy Hoffman, who now chairs the Swift Boat Veterans group.

No doubt the Republicans hope that attacking Kerry will distract from important issues they would prefer not to discuss or debate. But their campaign is backfiring, as drawing fresh attention to Vietnam does not flatter the candidate who avoided service there.

That is what's tough abou parodies. In written format with no tune the reader's knowledge of the tune is needed for the song to work.

Glad I got one right!

Now you come up this thread attacking both of them. At this point, your motivations are suspect and your crocodile tears are not persuasive.

I've come to understand that when you start misrepresenting my posts, it's futile to attempt a correction.

Why do his motives ALWAYS have to be suspect?

No one involved in this project expected to make new friends among the Democrats as a consequence of coming forward with this information. We all knew we would get hammered. The Swift Vets would get hammered personally, the Conason-types would go after the vendors, the contributors, the PR consultant, and anybody else they think they can slime. So what? This has become the price of free speech in this country. Stand up for anything that harms liberalism, and you get your head shot off by the media.

I am going to haul out that old "Make your own T-shirt" software package I bought a few years ago, and make one that says, "I was slimed by Joe Conason." I'll wear it as a badge of honor.

So what if Conason pulls some guilt-by-association crap. "This guy gave $100,00 and he once gave money to Bush, so therefore..." The PR consultant once worked for a Republican, so therefore.... Bill Franke "has ties" to John Ashcroft, Tom Wyld once worked for the NRA; the web guy is "apparently an affiliate" of all those extremists on FR.

This is what they have for mud to throw. Are you worried about it? I'm proud to stand here with Joe Conason's mud on me. I've worked two years to earn it. Having achieved this lofty position, I must now revise my goals. My goal now is to have Evita tell me to "shove it." When she does, you can furrow your brow at me again. Right now though, I have to get back to trying to keep this web site running. Swiftvets is now #5 on Alexa's list of "Movers and Shakers," and we have passed up moveon.org in traffic. It's a busy place.

You have made a total of, I think, 4 posts on this thread.

No where in any of those posts did I see you "attacking both of them".

For the record, FWIW.

Breaking Update: 5.

I appreciate that, thanks.

I sense, however, that the trump card is drawn, and the conversation is over.

They're only suspect when they warrant suspicion. Sabertooth was sympathetic to Hon (now banned) who claimed to be working with Lipscomb, a somewhat competitor to Corsi and the Swifties. Hon has been relentless in his criticism of Corsi on antifreeper boards.

Now Sabertooth shows up here claiming Corsi was derelict in his due diligence and is responsible for the hit on the Swifties because *gasp* there are conservatives in their midst, one of whom happens to be a member of the FRN!

I find his argument unpersuasive and self serving.

Next, on another thread Sabertooth makes this comment..."This will be a huge blow to their credibility, unfortunately, but to be fair, it wasn't the responsibility of the Swift Vets to triplecheck every allegation. That task belonged to the authors of "Unfit for Command," one of whom, Jerry Corsi, is a Freeper."

There are two issues here. One, Sabertooth is not being truthful. Corsi's comments about sKerrys medals is based on the comments of dozens of other Swifties, not just the commander who backed off on his signed affidavit somewhat today. The fact is he signed the thing and that is what Corsi knew to be a fact. That he has now retracted some is not Corsi's fault and Corsi did his due diligence, but Sabertooth would like you to think he was derelict in some way.

The next issue is that Sabertooth mentions Corsi is a FReeper (he doesn't post under his real name). In a later post, he mentions that he checked DU and they are talking about this, we can assume it may now show up in the media. Why is Sabertooth feeding DU, and by extension the media that is trying to smear the Swifties, information like this?

First he complains that the Swifties left themselves open to lefty attack by associating with know conservatives *gasp* and then proceeds to offer them more grist for their smear machine?

Ya, I think something smells here.

Well, I for one hope you are wrong.

I tire of this happening everytime you ask questions or comments.

I think you raise legitimate questions/concerns and as one who cannot always formulate that question/concern in an articulate post, I appreciate you asking those questions sort of "for me".

You now specifically site two separate instances, one that happened a while ago where you say ST was sympathetic to Hon (it's his right to be that way, don't you think?); and two, you quote a comment from another thread and drag it over here, along with your assumptions that is "attacking" people.

I doubt very highly that ST is "FEEDING" DU ANYTHING...as if those losers need any help...how disingenuous of you!!!

Personally, I think it matters naught what ST posts; to you anyway.
