Where have I smeared Keyes?

"I say that Keyes was not selected to win. He was selected to dim Obama's lamp as much as is practical. Right now, people think Obama is the Second Coming, and that needs to be countered somehow, even if he wins anyway."

Even more important...

KEYES ON THE TICKET WILL BRING CONSERVATIVES WHO WERE CONSIDERING STAYING HOME TO THE POLLS IN *DROVES*

Keyes might lose, but Dubya has a better chance of winning IL.

As much as I respect and like Dr. Keyes, I don't think this will work.

Depends what your definition of "work" is. Will he win? Probably not. Will he make Obama work for the seat and fire up the conservative base? You betcha. And that second point is my definition of "work."

I also remember how much Hitlery was chastized for being a carpetbagger when she ran in NY. Are we prepared to take the same flak when Keyes runs in IL?

See Post #390.

Ah, I see. That 1855 vote is described in most chronologies in terms of his helping to defeat someone else. But you're about the three losses. Nonetheless, comparing Lincoln's record to Keyes' is a bit of a stretch.

Barack Obama will be the next Senator from IL. NOT Alan Keyes.

Spoken with the certitude of a prophet.

How's about helping me out with the Lotto numbers, eh?

"When was the last time two black candidates for senate ran against each other?"

Two major-candidate black candidates running for the Senate against each other? It's never happened before.

Of course, Obama barely knew his Kenyan father (he was raised by his white mother and maternal grandparents in Hawaii), so Obama is not really culturally black.

I don't have a dog in this fight

Bull. You wouldn't be on this thread if that was the case. Get on board or step aside and let someone take your place. I was opposed to Bush in 2000 but when he won the nomination, I jumped on board. Do the same.

I almost expected someone during the convention to say, "Obama...he just talks so well."

Several people said just that.

I surely hope that folks here realize that this situation, especially this thread, forever changes the dynamic of any future debates for our cause.

Right?

Keyes should win this race.

Keyes has about as much chance of winning this race as helicoptering in the ex Judge Moore of Alabama to be the nominee.

Yep, I could see right through the guy, he talks a good game but his talk and the party he signed up with are a mismatch. It just doesn't add up.

Should we be critical of Keyes any more than than we should be critical of Ballantine?

ONE MORE TIME: I am not being critical of Alan Keyes; I resent Dick Cheney being used to justify Alan Keyes doing something that he himself said wasn't right in 2000.

This is not my state; they can run whoever they want.

>> Could you please explain how Lincoln "won the popular vote" for the Senate a full 56 years before the first time the people ever voted in a U.S. Senate election?
Before the 17th Amendment was ratified in 1913, Senators were elected by the state legislatures.
<<

Lincoln won in a statewide referendum vote, I believe it was pretty narrow though, like Lincoln-52%, Douglas-48%. The state legislature was controlled by RATs and disregarded that, and gave it to Douglas by a margin of around 60-40.

That's why Lincoln was running around the state doing debates and taking it to "the people", he figured he could get them to pressure their local leaders to do the "right thing" and crossover for Lincoln if they had a Democrat representing a heavily anti-slavery district.

Incidnetially, the 1858 election is yet another example that state legislatures are full of corrupt hacks in rigged districts and they do NOT represent "local" interests. If the 17th amendment was repealed, Alabama, which is heavily conservative, would now send two liberal RATS to the U.S. Senate because the legislature is drawn to have a RAT majority thanks to a few yellow-dog conservative areas selecting "conservative" RAT officials, which in turn vote put the liberal RAT plurality into statewide control.

I'm not following, but I'd like to hear your take on this.

..does your hatred of Alan run that deep?...

Yep. For a lot of them, it does. Anything positive about Keyes pushes a lot of mean-spirited buttons: Sinkspur, with his hatred of ordained moral authority; Harrowup, sowing discord for his own perverse amusement; and another poster I won't name, still jealous of the pre-emininence (Keyes' assistant) Clinton's a Liar once held, here. Archived Keyes threads going back six years will show the same names, the same hate; only the posting dates change.

I wish Keyes well in the election, if he decides to accept the invitation.
