Barack Obama will be the next Senator from IL. NOT Alan Keyes.

We said that about a Republican candidate in Virginia until his plane crashed. The Democrat won the election.

Oops--just realized that OBama might not be black so the historical aspect would be moot. Anyway, Alan Keys can hold his own in any debate and given the seeming disarray in the Ill Rep party, he should be a good strong candidate for them. Hope he decides to accept the offer.

But how much is it going to cost the RATS to try to win this race ? They thought they had a cakewalk in Illinois, they thought wrong !

Cheney was never under attack by anyone here that I've read. Just stated a fact that everyone who mentioned it was just dandy with; Howlin was defending her position. That is, of course, her perrogative.

We owe Alan Keyes. This is pretty much a no-win fight, but it will be a great opportunity for our best spokesman to make our case. Thanks Alan for taking this on.

Amen. The arm-chair gloom-and-doom defeatists on this thread notwithstanding, Alan is a fighter and will give Osama a fight whereas he was expected to coast before. I wish he would have come here to NJ to run!!

Could you please explain how Lincoln "won the popular vote" for the Senate a full 56 years before the first time the people ever voted in a U.S. Senate election?

In Illinois, and perhaps in other states, there was a non-binding popular vote. Lincoln received nearly 4,100 more votes than Douglas in 1858. But in the binding legislature vote, he lost 46-54.

I am not arguing against ANYTHING OR ANYBODY. I am defending Dick Cheney, who was needlessly and inaccurately smeared by the Keyes people to justify Keyes going back on his own statement!

Howlin, Where's the unity?!? Should we be critical of Keyes any more than than we should be critical of Ballantine? Heck no! The point is getting good candidates elected, and we all need to work together!

IMO, Keyes will win outside Cook County with a good margin.

Can he make inroads in Cook County? That's the question.

It all depends on how the race is run.

Alan will have the best of the best on his team. That's all I'm willing to say right now.

Facts is facts, Pappy. I don't have a dog in this fight, since I don't live in Illinois. But this would be a lonely thread if just those from the Land of Lincoln were on it.

I'm not defending Obama, and no Keyster's going to be influenced by anything I say about Keyes.

Let's just hope he supports George W. Bush in the upcoming election.

I'm wrong

Wrong about what, exactly? Why are we arguing?

Simple question: Keyes, Obama or someone else who is running? Choose your side. There is no wrong answer, for you, because you support who you support. But there is a wrong answer for the country, and Obama, at least, I'm confident is one of them.

but please consider putting aside our differences for this one.

Where have I said one word about not liking Keyes? Granted, I'm not crazy about him, but this is not my state, so I have no pick on who they elect.

Once again, all I'm complaining about is 1) How nasty EV was to people who had honest points about Keyes and 2) the Keyes people trying to say Keyes going to Illinois is like Cheney going to Wyoming.

In short, the person you send to Washington has two primary responsibilities:

1. To be representative if the views of the people who sent him

2. To look after the interest of the state when those interest are in competition with the interest of other states.

Now, as it has fallen out over the years, thanks primarily to the constitutionally assigned duties of the Senate, the latter of those two purposes has fallen more heavily on the House, and the former more heavily on the Senate.

Now, as a matter of practical application, while your Senator is by no means irrelevant in terms of local issues, that's usually worked out in one fashion - bringing home the pork.
So, the questions you have to ask yourself are these:

A. "Is the Candidate who has lived here but agrees with me on nothing more likely to represent my views in the Senate than the one who agrees with me on everything but doesn't live here?"
B. "Is my hunger for pork more important than voting for a man who most closely reflects my views on the great issues of the day?"

No one can answer those questions for you.

Dick Cheney had a residence in Wyoming.
Well if I had the millions he has, I'd have more than one residence, too, and in multiple states. Doesn't mean I'm a resident there, though.

I don't mind that Cheney is rich. More power to him. The point is he didn't live there. Not for about a decade or so. He had to change redisencies in order to be on the ballot, and I think he's the finest VP we've probably had over the last 100 years. I'm glad he did what he did, and what he was Constitutionally and morally authorized to do, to get on the ticket.
