Bands Gather to Stump Against Bush
AP ^ | Aug 4, 2004

NEW YORK (AP) - In an unprecedented series of concerts in nine swing states, more than 20 musical acts - including Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and the Dixie Chicks - will perform fund-raising concerts one month before the Nov. 2 election in an effort to unseat President Bush.

The shows, which will begin Oct. 1 in Pennsylvania, will take an unusual approach: as many as six concerts on a single day in cities across the states expected to decide the November presidential race. Other stops on the tour are North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin and the key state in 2000, Florida.

``We're trying to put forward a group of progressive ideals and change the administration in the White House,'' Springsteen told The Associated Press in the most overtly political statements of his 30-year career. ``That's the success or failure, very clear cut and very simple.''

The artists of different generations and genres will tour under the name ``Vote For Change,'' with shows Oct. 1-8. But the money generated will go to America Coming Together, which promises on its Web site to ``derail the right-wing Republican agenda by defeating George W. Bush.''

The anticipated millions of dollars will be spent in the swing states before the presidential election, said ACT president Ellen Malcolm.

The shows will be presented by MoveOn Pac, the electoral arm of the liberal interest group MoveOn.org, with an official announcement expected Wednesday.

There was no immediate word on prices for tickets, which were going on sale for all shows Aug. 21. The shows will pair artists, such as Springsteen and REM or the Dixie Chicks and James Taylor. There will be 34 shows in 28 cities.

Natalie Maines, of the Dixie Chicks, who memorably told a London audience last year that she was ashamed to share her home state of Texas with Bush, echoed a Springsteen comment that this was the most important election of their lives.

``A change is in order,'' Maines said. ``There's never been a political climate like this, which is so the polar opposite of me as a person and what I believe in.''

The idea was hatched by several of the acts' managers, and quickly expanded. ``Once we started talking to each other, ideas started percolating and other artists started reaching out to us,'' said Jon Landau, Springsteen's manager.

Other artists participating in the shows include hip-hoppers Jurassic 5, John Mellencamp, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Babyface, Bright Eyes and the Dave Matthews Band. Most have a history of social activism, from Browne's anti-nuclear concerts to Mellencamp's Farm Aid shows. Pearl Jam front man Vedder was a Ralph Nader backer in 2000.

``At some point, you can't sit still,'' said Vedder, a harsh critic of the Iraq war. ``You can't spend your life, when people are getting killed, without asking serious questions about why.''

Springsteen said he didn't fear any backlash over going public with his personal politics.

``It's a pretty clear-cut decision in November,'' said Springsteen, whose songs have provided a backdrop for some Kerry events. ``We're chipping in our two cents. That's all we're trying to do.''

Shut up and sing.

Actually, this is the way they should have done it all along. Here, they're billing it as a political event, so the folks paying the big bucks to get in know what (stupid s*!t) they're in for.

Wheter or not they'll be getting their moneys worth is another matter altogether.

"It's a pretty clear-cut decision in November," said Springsteen,

Yes, it surely is. What fascinates me is these musicians think that because of their wealth they can impose their views on their audiences. It really is the height of audaciousness and being verrrrrry full of themselves. I have always gone to concerts to hear music and forget about everything else for a few hours. I can't imagine attending any of these shows and having their Anti Bush-Rhetoric thrust upon me (or Huge screens telling me how evil Bush is,like at a Pearl Jam Concert) when all I really want to do is smile. Thank goodness none of the people/bands listed appeal to me and I humbly await for November 3rd when GWB wins re-election so I can laugh my _ss off! Can you imagine how bitter these individuals will feeeeeeeel then? LOLOLOL

Too bad about James Taylor...used to be a favorite of mine

Same here, although I have only one Taylor CD. But the trash man came two days ago and the dumpster's empty, so there's plenty of room for that CD. Pardon me for a minute . . .

Did you know that a CD tossed into an empty dumpster hits with a rather resounding and satisfying thunk?

You've pretty much summed it up. I have a fairly large Springsteen collection as a fan since '78. If I don't destroy it, I'm thinking of selling it and donating the money to our President. The problem with that is that some liberal will enjoy the CDs.

He sang that he wishes he were blind. I wish he'd go mute.

Buddy, I am so with you on Freeping the Philly show(I live in Maryland, north of D.C.). My screenname, is, in fact, taken from the song "Shut Out the Light". I need a new screenname, and new passwords for all my e-mail accounts.

I am done with Bruce Springsteen. I first heard his music when i was four, and I was a hardcore fan from January '85, until the FedEx show last year, when he said we should "impeach this president and put somebody in there who can get us out of this mess". I don't care that he said it as a way of introducing Clarence[Clemons]. I can see through him so easily...

No more. I ashamed that I was a blind follower of this man for so long. I spend so much $$$ following him around to ten shows in '99-00, and then three more(MCI Center, Richmond Coliseum & FedEx Field) in 2002-03.

Ashamed and embarrased. I hope everyone here accepts my apologies. it was one thing to idolize Bruce back in the '80s, when I was a kid, but he is just sad, now.....

Time to take the same approach we took with Slimfast and Unilever. Let's begin cataloging alternative bands and performers to spend our hard earned cd and concert cash with instead of these out and out leftists: I'll start, perhaps others of you can add to the list.

Bruce Springsteen and the E St. Band

Amazing that they can attempt and probably do this while the NRA and other pro freedom groups are to be muzzled at the same time under the so called "Freedom of Information Act".

Unprecedented in scale and strategy, ACT is building the largest voter mobilization effort in history to elect progressive [regressive] candidates to federal, state and local offices in November. For more information on ACT visit www.act04.com

MoveOn PAC is a 2.5 million-member online grassroots[paid employee] political action committee working to take back our government. By gathering small[multi-million dollar] contributions from ordinary citizens [foreign nationals], it is using the Internet to level the playing field against the interest of big corporate money in politics. Its sister organization, MoveOn.org, raises issues of war and peace, social justice[ -ism], media integrity and honesty in government. For more information, visit Move-on.org.

"This election is the most important one in our lifetime," said Dave Matthews. "It may be the most important in America's history."

Outright lies. Maybe it's time to FReep Moveon.org.

This political climate has been in existance since the 1992 campaign, right through the Clinton years. It's just that the shoe is on the other foot now, and you are just beginning to notice it Ms. Maines.

I agree in general with what you say, with some minor alterations. My opinion (for what its worth) is that the 'Rats became unhinged with the '94 congressional elections when they lost control of an institution they had pretty much owned for several decades. Then, you have the 2000 election in which the 'Rat party has perpetuated the myths of it being stolen, minorities being disenfranchised, etc. And so, the rabid, anti-logical hatred of Bush carries over into every political subject of our day.

Also, the Clinton-bashing of the '90s was based on facts and logic, unlike the Bush-bashing of today, and the GOP majority in Congress was willing to work with him and passed some fairly meaningful legislation (e.g. welfare reform) without the immature temper tantrums and refusals to vote on nominations, etc.

What has been the same, however, are the tactics of denial, attacking the accuser, changing the subject, denying the obvious (e.g. oral sex is not sex, perjury is not impeachable) that became the standard 'Rat m.o. during Clinton's term and has remained so today.

Somehow, you should slip in a piece of paper or write faintly on the CDs that the money you get for them is going to the Bush/Cheney '04 fund! Then you would always have the last laugh. Maybe write it faintly in the liner notes or something.

What is so unprecedented about this bunch of socialist, betray America for a buck, tub thumpers organizing to bash Pres Bush? These types of groups are already doing it all over our country. Warped Tour bands have hating Bush as a common theme. One band called Flogging Molly is rabidly anti Pres Bush. They leave their native Ireland to come here and make the big money they wouldn't be able to keep in their own socialist country. In the meantime, Pres Bush is keeping this country safe for all of these anti Americans, home grown and foreign, to tour the country spewing their hate. They are all biting the hand of the country that feeds and protects them. God bless and save America.

Bruce Springsteen, man of the people? my a$$. Dude, you are so done twenty years ago. Everything after "Born in the USA" is crap, but they make very nifty drink coasters. When you first came out, you were touted as the new Dylan. I think of you as the new Suess only Suess trying to be clever. You aren't good enough to swallow Dylan's backwash.

R.E.M. is just the same obnoxious crap since 1984. "This one goes out to the one I love" and "Orange Crush" are mantras for gouging out your own ear drums. I have the IRS albums but only because I got them for free. I'm too lazy to throw them out. You put Michael stipe in a turtleneck and he'd look like a male unit.

John Cougarmellancougarcampycougarcampcamp. Pick a goddamn and run with it. No one is going to follow you, if you keep on moving your place alphabetically in the music stores. Even Prince was known as 'the artist formerly known as Prince' after he did his name to that symbol, I just called him squiggly. Anyway, John Mulletheadcamp . . . No one cares about you. You are too lame to even get good rotation on classic rock radio. Here's a little ditty about shut the hell up and sing, you dumb overindulged limosine liberal with no connection to the heartland.

The Dixie Chicks, too easy a target . . .

These people trying to revive their waining careers. I am surprised Michael Jackson hasn't jumped on the bandwagon. You Pop Stars all work for us and without the people who buy your music, you are nothing. To use the often quoted line from Donald Trump: "You're Fired."
