Why would anyone do metal lining to the suitcase for the meth lab? "Hoses and wires" appear to be either a description of dispersal system parts (but where is the pressure source - gas microcylinder or pyrotechnic?) or a part in a training drill scenario.

"Might have been an IED" What the heck is that?

Birth control device. Some say it causes cancer, so perhaps that's why it was a hazmat incident...

According to Yahoo, 31st and Indiana's about 3.2 miles south of State and Madison in the center of the Loop. It's on the South Side, near a hospital and the Illinois Institute of Technology, though.

"Of course those things can go BOOM just as much as easily as a bomb"

No offense intended, but I don't think you know what your talking about...

The most volatile chemical used in "meth" production is acetone, the same acetone that your wife uses to remove nail polish. It is less explosive (though has a lower flash point) than the gas you burn in your car.

Common solvents used in meth production:

COMMON METH LAB CHEMICALS

•Solvents: Include acetone, ether/starter fluid, Freon, Coleman fuel, methanol, toluene, white gas, xylene.

Symptoms/health effects:

Irritation to skin, eyes, nose and throat; headache; dizziness; depression; nausea; vomiting; visual disturbance; cancer.

None of this stuff is extremely explosive... Much of it is in many homes and garages.

Anhydrous ammonia is often used in meth production and can cause explosions.

In my parts, some of the labs have really self destructed.

The morning update. News reports are identifying the "package" as "some sort of construction device". Both articles I have read in the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times report details contrary to what I heard police and fire officials comminicate via their radios. I heard on both police and fire channels that the case was not able to be x-rayed, yet the reports say they determined what it was through x-rays. Also, the reported times of the incident don't match with the actual times of occurence.

I am a long time listener to police/fire scanner radio, and the activity around this incident was unlike any I have heard before. I think someone had a neuralizer (Men In Black) in use on the crowd...

"Just a piece of constuction equipment folks, nothing to see here, return to your homes."
