U.S. Job Cuts Rise 8% in July, Hirings Fall

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Layoffs in the United States rose 8 percent in July from the previous month, a report said on Monday, as the job market recovery struggled to gain momentum.

The outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. said employers announced 69,572 job cuts in July, up from 64,343 in June but down 18 percent from July 2003.

Hiring announcements also declined, but companies do not announce hires as frequently as they announce layoffs. The number of announced hires fell to 26,880, a 30 percent decline from June's 38,377. June hiring announcements fell 31 percent from May.

The upcoming U.S. elections and an apparent sputter in economic growth late in the second quarter seem to be making companies less inclined to hire now, said Rick Cobb, executive vice president at Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

But generally, layoff announcements have been trending lower over the last few years, as economic growth has accelerated, Cobb said.

A new trick, compare monthly numbers to previous high growth months then voila,a negative sounding report. This way job growth can be reported as a negative.

The good news is you can't spin the economy, Americans actually live in the US economy as opposed to say Iraq.

I have a sister who worked for Dow Chemical and was laid off last month. The company announced that it was laying off 35 workers, and a week later the same company announced it was hiring 30 workes for a new latex plant. The workers could have been re-trained or transferred. They did ask my sister if she wanted to go back (with less pay, of course), and she told them to go where the sun doesn't shine.

Sometimes I don't understand big corporate decisions.

I oversee online marketing and advertising for a company.

First rule of numbers, don't compare this month's profit to last month's, or this month's costs to last month's cost.

Always compare, this month's numbers to numbers of the same month, one year ago!!!

"...but companies do not announce hires as frequently as they announce layoffs."

hmmm.... so why is it worth reporting what they announce if it's not accurate? Maybe 8000000000000 people were hired unanounced. What are we learning in this story? Lazy @ss biased reporter....

If it's a Willie Green post... that can only mean one thing...

We're all doomed.

When I see a Willie Green post the only thing I can think of is Cletus from The Simpsons.

That's funny, since this was just reported yesterday;

"About 247,000 jobs were probably created, more than twice as many as in June, the Labor Department is expected to report Friday." (Manufacturing, Hiring Picked Up in July: U.S. Economy Preview Aug. 1 (Bloomberg))

Of course Willie has to search far and wide for his doom and gloom propaganda to maintain his negative FR campaign.

By the way, during the past 7 months of block-busting GOOD economic and employment news, did Willie manage to post ONE positive post?

Poor Willie.
Sad Willie.
Poor, sad Willie.

Doomed, we're all destined for the scrap heep! There is no hope. There is no future. There is only Doom, and maybe some Gloom, but only when there is no Doom. In other words there can and will be only Doom and Gloom, except when there's no hope. Except when it's over and you can hear a fat lady singing, unless you hear Willie singing, oh never mind.

That's very poetic of you. Of course, it doesn't make a whit of difference because we're all doomed.

I've noticed that too. Willie Green only posts only Bush-bashing material. Funny that a conservative freeper would do such a thing.
