GOP nears choice for Senate [ALAN KEYES?]

Republican Party officials are planning a meet-the-candidate tour for the U.S. Senate nominee they hope to name at a meeting Tuesday to replace former candidate Jack Ryan.

.....

Republican sources said a late entry into the race may be former presidential candidate Alan Keyes, a conservative who served as an ambassador to the United Nations in the Reagan administration and ran far behind George W. Bush in the 2000 Republican presidential primaries. Keyes, a Harvard-educated radio commentator from Maryland, also ran unsuccessfully for president in 1996, and for U.S. senator from Maryland in 1988 and 1992.

"I know he has expressed some interest but I don't know how far he's moved on this," said one Republican source. "It's far from reality, yet as the saying in law enforcement goes, he's `a person of interest.'"

State Sen. Steve Rauschenberger of Elgin, who came in third behind Ryan in the March primary, said having Keyes, who is black, run against Obama--whose keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention last week has made him a leading black Democrat--would focus the race on debating issues.

If Keyes does run and lose then that will mean he will have lost runs for the Senate in two different states. How often has that happened?

Keyes would knock the socks off of obama...I saw him in NH during the 2000 primaries, he was by far the best speaker and he had everybody all riled up!

I think it would be an excellent matchup. Keyes knows the arguments as well as Obama...and Keyes can always use Kerry's overworn line: I've served...I've been there.

Obama has this race already won. Any money the GOP spends trying to defeat him personally is wasted.

But what the heck, it will keep Keyes busy.

I don't know about any general election candidates, but Senator Bob Smith lost in the GOP Senate primary in NH in 2002, and is in the process of losing in the Florida Senate primary this year.

I am not getting my hopes up, but I do believe Keyes would be the best choice. Obama would have a VERY HARD time debating this guy -- I bet he only agrees to one debate.

Alan Keyes is a grownup and an intact American Man -- and would wipe the floor with ladyboy blarack obama.

[That feller any relation to Ladysmith Black Mambazo?]

It will keep Obama busy, too, and prevent him for rallying black support for Kerry around the country.
