August 3, 2004

Former president Bill Clinton is always worth watching as an onstage performer, whether he's doing imitations of Elvis Presley's singing Don't be Cruel or playing his saxophone.

One can't say that about another Democrat, Teddy Kennedy, whose self-righteous indignation hides a rather sordid past.

Kennedy should have spruced up his act at the Democratic National Convention in Boston this past week by wearing a frogman's outfit when he appeared at the podium. That would have not only brought back to memory the reason why Kennedy, himself, never made it to the White House, but it would also have given the audience a few chuckles.

And we surely do need to have a bit of a frivolous attitude when viewing the Democrats.

I'm not suggesting they are as hypocritical and as arrogant as Canada's federal Liberals -- and they are surely less crooked -- but they do see only one side of any issue. That side is their side. No one else has any valid points to make.

I did note that after treating former president Jimmy Carter as a leper for the past 20 years, he has now been forgiven for losing to Ronald Reagan's Republican landslide in 1980.

Jimmy didn't make a stirring speech at the convention, but at least he didn't pretend to be anything he isn't. One guesses the man who confessed to Playboy magazine that he had "committed adultery in his heart many times" is now seen as an elder statesman.

On the question of real, not imagined adultery, I found Clinton's own speech to be somewhat lacking in fine tidbits.

Politically, it was a neat call to arms, but he could have added a bit of spice.

What about his soiree with Paula Jones? And Hilary Clinton's reaction to that little spree.

What about his fling with Gennifer Flowers? Hilary's reaction to that one, too.

No mention either of Monica Lewinsky -- though we do know Hilary's reaction to that -- Bill got a slap in the face, a mouthful of abuse and spent some nights on the couch.

No mention from Clinton about the impeachment proceedings against him or that he had to voluntarily surrender his lawyer's licence in order to avoid suffering the shame of being disbarred.

Clinton got a rousing ovation, but the things he didn't say would have made for a far more entertaining evening.

Some fellows could have even made a small fortune hawking cigars around the convention hall.

Looking at the convention on CNN again made me grit my teeth against the Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for banning Fox News from our country. You can bet Fox News commentators would have been asking far more probing questions than the interviewers on Ted Turner's birthchild. At least we were spared Ted's ex -- Jane Fonda -- from the show.

We were not spared presidential nominee John Kerry's super-rich wife Teresa Heinz Kerry. Now, this heiress often speaks without thinking of the consequences beforehand -- I guess that's what folks do who have never had to work for a living -- but she's not as dumb as some suggest. After all, she did make sure John signed a 'prenup' before she married him. She may have a million or so gallons of tomato sauce in her kitchen, but if the marriage falls apart, John isn't going to get a free pipeline to the stuff.

Teresa Heinz actually had not a bad word to say about her husband -- to her, he's a hero, and she thinks he should be a hero to every other American.

There was no mention of certain of hubby's characteristic flaws. As when, leading an anti-Vietnam war demonstration, he pretended to throw the medals he had been awarded in that conflict into the garbage bin. Instead, he secretly hid them away, to gaze at late at night when no one was looking.

How many more things has Kerry been dishonest about?

There is the charge by President George W. Bush that only 12 Senators voted against last year's $87 billion appropriation to support U.S. soldiers in Iraq -- and two of those were John Kerry and his running mate John Edwards. To Bush's charge, Kerry countered with his now infamous remark: "I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it!"

Where does this man really stand on any issue? What is his moral compass? We really don't know. That's what's so worrying about John Kerry.

The ability to marry rich women is surely a notable skill.

But it isn't quite the same as having the ability to tell the truth and run the most powerful nation in the world.

"...and they are surely less crooked...."

Good article, but I'm not so sure I agree with this statement about our liberals.

Awesome.

The Liberals in Canada are far worse than the Democrats.

They have left the country virtually defenseless against terrorist or military attack.

And have strained the relationship with America, when we, and our tax-financed military, are the only reason Canada remains free today.

80% of Canadians choose to live within 100 miles of the U.S. border. How convenient.

Canada is free-loading on the pocketbook of America while denouncing them, and there is no greater condemnation of the Liberals than that.
