FORT LEWIS, Wash. (AP) - A Muslim chaplain cleared of espionage charges after being imprisoned for 76 days resigned from the Army on Monday, saying officials never apologized or allowed him to retrieve his belongings from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Capt. James Yee, 35, ministered to prisoners at Guantanamo Bay naval station, where the military is holding suspected Muslim terrorists. He was taken into custody after the military initially linked him to a possible espionage ring at the Guantanamo Bay naval station in Cuba.
"Those unfounded allegations - which were leaked to the media - irreparably injured my personal and professional reputation and destroyed my prospects for a career in the United States Army," Yee wrote in his resignation letter.
Yee asked to be discharged on Jan. 7.
The Army arrested him last September carrying what authorities said were classified documents. He was eventually charged with mishandling classified material, failing to obey an order, making a false official statement, adultery and conduct unbecoming an officer.
In March, Army officials dismissed all criminal charges against him, but found him guilty of the non-criminal Army charges of adultery and downloading pornography. The reprimand he received was thrown out by an Army general a month later.
Sens. Carl Levin of Michigan and Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts have asked the Pentagon to investigate the handling of Yee's case, saying it called into question the fairness of military justice.
Lt. Col. Bill Costello, a spokesman for Fort Lewis, had no immediate comment, saying a call from The Associated Press was the first he had heard of Yee's resignation.

Inevitable.
There was porn on his computer, but more importantly a fellow officer had admitted to an affair with him.
There is no way he was advancing. His career was over

Well, be honest. Was he cleared of espionage, or not? Are the quotes in your title justified, or not?
They're justified if OJ was found innocent should be placed in quotes.
I think in the New Army adultery, fornicaton, porno, and mishandling classified is okay, just as long as you don't get fat.
Had an affair who who? Female or male officer?
Good riddance.
You do have a point.
Maybe they should hang a sign that says "big-boned Samoan and Hawaiian Males should reconsider."
Yee damaged himself, while playing cleric, he was a practicing adulterer. He made himself a joke.
Both...he male and she female.
Caught...she confessed....an act no officer would admit to if it were not true.
If he is a true Muslim, he will turn against the United States, and I am sure he will blame the United States and his treatment of his fellow Muslims in Gitmo.
Never mind that they want us dead. It's a fact that gets in the way of a good Muslim story.
a dog
I agree, however, I'd add that he had already turned against the U.S.
As one poster has pointed out. Yee wasn't "innocent." He simply wasn't prosecuted due to the probably release of classified info in trial.
The military figured he was small fry who couldn't advance in career, anyway, so why compromise the classified info.
I do have some questions as to why the letter of reprimand was thrown out of his file. I have not heard whether they disposed of the adultery charge by local ucmj punishment. If so, that would be separate from the letter of reprimand.
Perhaps the letter included reprimand for suspicions and not just for proven acts.
Yes, but we're not talking about innocence.
You can debate if he was "innocent," but cleared or not is a statement of fact.
I have more faith in our military tribunals than you do, apparently.
One less terrorist sympathizer in the armed forces to worry about.
What's happened to the other muslim soldier who rolled grenades into his S2 tent?
Does anyone know ...what this Wahabbist promoted among his young impressionable Muslim charges...in their secret meetings and studies...?
Looks like the same thing...Here ya go:

We don't need muslims in the military or federal law enforcement. They cannot be trusted to carry out their duties. I am glad the swine resigned I hope his mosseleem brothers and sisters will follow his example.

Not sure, but I think court martial.
