In a statement made Monday to NewsMax.com, Nancy Reagan said she was strongly endorsing President Bush's re-election and rejected a published Internet report that she was not backing his re-election.
Joanne Drake, the chief of staff for former President Ronald Reagans office in Los Angeles, said in a statement on behalf of the former first lady, Mrs. Reagan supports President Bushs re-election 150 percent. Published reports have suggested that Mrs. Reagan was unhappy with President Bush for his opposition to taxpayer-funded stem cell research that kills human embryos, which Mrs. Reagan has supported after her husbands long bout with Alzheimers disease.
Mrs. Reagans son Ron spoke last week at the Democratic National Convention. He indicated that his mother supported his speech and that she was unhappy with the Bush administration for its stand on embryonic stem cell research.
Ron Reagan gave an implicit endorsement to the Kerry-Edwards ticket, which supports taxpayer funding of that type of research, when he told his national audience, Whatever else you do come Nov. 2, I urge you, please, cast a vote for embryonic stem cell research.
Drake, however, noted in her statement on behalf of Mrs. Reagan, I think everyone would understand that while she may not agree with the president on every issue, this campaign is more than just one issue its about leadership, and she believes that President Bush is the right man for the job.
Mrs. Reagans statement came on the heels of a report published Friday on the Web site capitolhillblue.com.
That story, headlined "Nancy Reagan to Bush: 'We Don't Support Your Re-Election,'" quoted a spokesman for Mrs. Reagan as telling the site, "Mrs. Reagan does not support President Bushs re-election and neither do most members of the Presidents family."
Drake also denied the Web sites claim that Mrs. Reagan told Republican leaders she wanted nothing to do with the party or President Bush, or that she "went ballistic" when she learned the Bush campaign was test marketing ads that used Reagans photos and speeches in an effort to show he supported Bush and his re-election.
Capitolhillblue.com also claimed that Mrs. Reagan called Republican Party chief Ed Gillespie to demand the ads be destroyed.
The quote that appeared in Capitol Hill Blue is incorrect, Drake said on behalf of Mrs. Reagan. Further, I do not know where the information came from [indicating that] the former first lady went ballistic when she read the Bush campaign was test marketing new ads. She did not speak to Ed Gillespie on the telephone and demand the ads be destroyed ...
By endorsing President Bushs re-election, Mrs. Reagan joins President Reagan elder son, Michael, who has already announced his strong support for the president's re-election. Michael will be speaking at the GOP convention in New York.
I'm sure capitalhillsblues is not on their priority reading list.
Thank you GD.
Coming from you, I am humbled.
This assualt is unprescidented,
and regardless of the polls swinging
our way, we need to continue our fight,
because they do not have a depth too low.
Can he be anymore of a liar?
I'd say he's caught dead to rights on this one.
A 46 year old man needs his mommy's approval?
Roger that ~ Dave!
You think he spoke without her geing aware he was gonna speak? come on now.
They are getting confirmation from her Astrologer.
I don't know, they aren't on the same political page. Who knows what they discuss, no one really does. And him being a flaming lib and all... I'm just suggesting he's a grown up (FWIW) and doesn't need to get her approval.

After recently burying my octogenarian mom, who lived for a year and a half after my dad's death, I am absolutely livid that Nancy's pansy son could be so crass and cruel to his mom, just for his 15 minutes of fame. I hope she disinherits him.
I feel that Nancy Reagan has always been fairly liberal, she just fell in love with Mr. Conservative.
I also figure Newsmax called the staffer and put her on the spot, she told then what they wanted to hear.
It's strange the only place on the internet or media, as far as I know, the story is carried is Newsmax. Don't you find that a little suspicious?
Exactly. Does anyone know if this story been posted by any other news source, since it was posted on Newsmax this afternoon?
Good point. Sorry. Forgot about that. Just got caught up in the "Jr" theme on Day 2 of the convention to make it easier for everyone to swiftly distinguish and sort of got into the habit.
Young Ron is the one who's sullied his fathers blood and name though. I had nothing to do with that.
Do YOU think he required her permission to speak?
Even more suspicious, the White House apparently is paying it no attention. I would think they would rush the news out if it was reliable.
She's not just a staffer. She's their press secretary. Didn't you watch the memorial services? She gave quite a few press conferences.
