The Economy Line: Expanding Manufacturing Activity
George W. Bush ^ | August 2, 2004

Posted on 08/02/2004 11:03:52 AM PDT by RWR8189

Manufacturing Activity Expands For 14th Consecutive Month.  "U.S. manufacturing expanded for the 14th consecutive month in July, boosted by new orders and higher production, the Institute for Supply Management said Monday. The institute said its manufacturing index registered 62.0 last month, up from 61.1 in June." (Eileen Alt Powell, "Manufacturing Activity Increases In July," The Associated Press, 8/2/04)

Manufacturing Sector Continues Rapid Growth.  "'The manufacturing sector continues to grow at a rapid rate,' Norbert J. Ore, chairman of the institute's survey committee, said in a statement accompanying the report. 'The growth of new orders and production accelerated during the month, adding strength to the index.'"  (Eileen Alt Powell, "Manufacturing Activity Increases In July," The Associated Press, 8/2/04)

Homeownership Breaks More Records.  "There are now 73.4 million homeowners in the United States, more than at any time in history. According to Census Bureau second quarter data released today, the new record homeownership rate is 69.2 percent, breaking the previous record of 68.6 percent. This new record is 783,000 more than in the first quarter of 2004 and almost 1.7 million more than in the second quarter of 2003.  Minority homeownership also set a new record with an increase of 0.2 percent in the second quarter. The rate of 51.0 percent means there are now 14.9 million minority homeowners in the United States."  (Press Release, Department of Housing and Urban Development, http://www.hud.gov/news/release.cfm?content=pr04-074.cfm, 7/29/04)

Starting Salaries Rise For College Graduates.  "Average starting salary offers to college graduates are on the rise, according to the Summer 2004 Salary Survey, which was recently published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). … Almost all of the business disciplines continue to show increases in their average starting salaries. For example, business administration graduates saw their average starting salaries increase to $38,188, a 2.9 percent jump from last year at this time." ("Starting Salary Offers for 2004 College Graduates Climbing," National Association of Colleges and Employers, http://www.naceweb.org/press/display.asp?year=&prid=194, 7/20/04)

Robust Growth And Spending Discipline Improves Budget Picture.  "Because of this growing economy, and the President's emphasis on spending discipline, I can report today that our budgetary outlook has improved considerably from just six months ago. In the Mid-Session Review, our projections for the combined deficits this year and next are lower by a total of more than $100 billion." ("Statement by Josh Bolten," Office of Management and Budget Statement, 7/30/04)

If you say so...
