New York Timesman Frank Rich is assuring concerned Democrats that there's nothing to worry about just because George Bush got the post-convention bounce they hoped would go to John Kerry in the latest Gallup poll.
"I think probably all of it's meaningless, anyway," Rich told radio host Don Imus on Monday. "There's no necessary correlation between the bounce after the convention and who wins in November historically." The one-time Times drama critic said that, in fact, the Dems show in Boston was "shockingly good."
"There were some speakers who were damn good," Rich told the I-man, "including, I must say, your man Kerry."
Rich wasn't quite so enthusiastic about Teresa "I'm not a Kerry" Heinz, who he said sounded "kinda weird."
"I don't know what to make of her," the Timesman said.
Imus, who has long backed the Massachusetts Democrat, sounded a bit embarrassed over his candidate's poor showing, telling Rich, "Let's not beat that to death - OK - my man Kerry."

The liberals are trying so hard to spin this debacle their way, they're likely to blow out their backs.

How many millions did the Dems spend for this non-bounce????

You know, I wish I was as smart as a liberl sometimes.
I keep telling my wife there's nothing to worry about. FWIW, I don't think Kerry will match Mondale.

Imus asked Frank Rich a question about Al Sharpton, and immediately, Rich launched into a tirade of criticism about FOXNews, accused them of cutting away from Sharpton's speech, insulting FOXNews with venom, until Imus interrupted him to say it was MSNBC not FOXNews that cut away from Sharpton's speech, that FOXNews showed the entire speech. Rich backed down, but did not retract what basically amounted to a charge of racism against FOXNews.

The Dems are in complete denial. Of course they went into there convention wanting a huge boost in the polls, and if they would have gotten it the media would be shoving it in all our faces. But since they did not get it they come off like a little kid now claiming that it didn't matter that much anyway. What else could they say? Maybe they'll feel better with the trumped up ABC poll to be released later today.

Every time I see a bunch of Democrats together, it reminds me of WELLSTONAPALOOZA 2002. I think the bad taste from that day really lingered with people...

He says the non-bounce is meaningless, yet he'd the first to scream that a bounce, had one occured, would have great meaning.

The people who come off looking real smart here are those Democratic Senate candidates who were conspicuously absent from the convention.

I wonder if he'll think it "meaningless" if there is no Bush "bounce" after the RepCon? . . . .

I remember watching conventions back as far as 1956 and I cannot recall any where there was NOT a bounce of some kind for the candidate immediately following the close of the shindig. It will be interesting to see if President Bush receives any kind of bounce in August. If he doesn't I guess we can put all this down to irrelevancy. Though what I expect to see is a slow erosion of Kerry's numbers along with a reciprocal rise in the President's. My (conservative) prediction: Bush by 4 to 5 points in November.

I applaud you for your attentiveness, but you seem to have forgotten McGovern who did not get a bounce in 72.

Imus show has become a liberal echo chamber where media liberals like Rich and Jonathan Alter live in some altered reality.
