MOVIE TRIVA

The main location of this film was an actual Los Angeles car wash a few blocks from McArthur Park. It was torn down in the late 1980s. While it was open, the marquee of the car wash announced it was featured in this film.

CANNONBALL RUN

Filmed when the Fed imposed a national 55 mph speed limit, The Cannonball Run is based on the real–life "Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Dash." It’s basically a fast–moving – and at times, somewhat slapstick – comedy with a huge cast of stars: Burt Reynolds, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Mel Tillis, Terry Bradshaw, Adriane Barbeau, Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett, Jack Elam, Dom DeLuise, Jamie Farr, Roger Moore (who plays a character who thinks he’s 007 and even drives an Astin–Martin with gadgets), and more. From Adriane Barbeau using her – er, ah, assets – to escape speeding tickets to the big fight with Peter Fonda’s motorcycle gang to Jack Elam as the mad proctologist, The Cannonball Run is a fun and funny movie

MOVIE TRIVA:

Don Rickles was originally cast as Fenderbaum before the part went to Sammy Davis Jr.
The ambulance used in the movie is the actual ambulance that Hal Needham and Brock Yates built and raced in the real Cannonball Run.
The producers asked the governor of Georgia if the crew could shut down the center of a small town so that a plane could land in the middle of it. The police blocked off the section that the plane was to land in and a barrier can be seen in the background.
The Ferrari 308 used in the movie belonged to director Needham, Hal.
Roger Moore (I) has a different girlfriend every time we see him in this movie and they are all voiced by June Foray (uncredited).
The first highway patrolman that pulls over Adrienne Barbeau and 'Tara Buckman" (qv) was Burt Reynold's stand-in (note the resemblance). race.
Jackie Chan, who played a small role in this movie, was very upset when he learned his character was Japanese since he himself is Chinese.
In one of the earlier scenes in the movie, Dom Deluise's character says "Maybe we could get a black Trans Am", and Burt Reynolds (I)'s character says, "No, it's been done before." This is a reference to Smokey and the Bandit (1977) which starred Reynolds, and was directed by Hal Needham, who directed this film. Deluise co-starred with Reynolds in the 1980 sequel, Smokey and the Bandit II (1980).

Released in 1963, the film became not only one of the longest comedies ever filmed (nearly 5 hours
in its initial cut), but boasted the most impressive casts of Hollywood comedic legends ever
assembled: Sid Caeser, Milton Berle, Phil Silvers, Ethel Mermen, Jonathan Winters, Buddy Hackett,
Terry-Thomas, Dick Shawn, Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy. If that weren't enough, the film boasted
nearly a dozen additional cameos by Hollywood legends that included Don Knotts, Jerry Lewis, and even
The Three Stooges.

SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT

Bandit and Cledus are two truck-driving southerners who accept a dare from big-shots Big and Little Enos to pick up a truckload of beer from Texas and return it to them within a specified amount of time. Picking it up is simple enough, but as they are leaving Texas, Bandit unwittingly picks up Carrie, a hitchhiking bride-to-be who just left her groom, Junior, at the altar. Junior, however, is the son of Sheriff Buford T. Justice. And when Buford and Junior discover what has happened, they go on a "high-speed pursuit" across the Southeast to catch the bandit.

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S

Based on Truman Capote's 1958 novella of the same title, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S (1961) is the story of a woman on her own making her way in the big city. As stories go, it is short on plot but rich in characterization which may explain why its protagonist, Holly Golightly, has become Audrey Hepburn's most memorable screen persona. In the hands of director Blake Edwards, the film neglects much of the book's foreboding edge, but gains an unforgettable comedic touch which actually helps accentuate the darker moments. In addition, Henry Mancini's musical score and Hubert de Givenchy's gowns for Ms. Hepburn successfully uphold Capote's style when the story itself is forced to leave his writing behind. Like the protagonist at its heart, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S is quirky, funny, bewildering, serious, sophisticated and bittersweet -- and as movies go, great entertainment.

WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM

The deranged adventures of Gonzo journalist Hunter Thompson and his attorney Oscar Acosta, referred to in the movie as "Laslow". Thompson attempts to cover the Super Bowl and the 1972 Presidential election in his typical drug-crazed state, but it continually and comically sidetracked by his even more twisted friend Laslow. Allegedly based on actual events.

Robert Daughtrey returned home from North Vietnam to a cheering crowd and a
thrilled wife, Sandra, and three children Jim 13 Sharon, 12 and Wade 10.
About 200 school children and the 27th Cadet Squadron from the Air Force
Academy watched as he disembarked from the plane piloted by General Albert
P. Clark Superintendent of the Academy. On his return he said "I am grateful
to those who worked so diligently so the POWs were not forgotten."

As he stood with a brace on his right arm he said "I like the clothing styles,
but I haven't made up my mind about the long hair." Both his arms were
broken when he ejected from his crippled F-105 on August 2 1965. In less
than two months after his capture, the North Vietnamese were using his
picture for propaganda purposes around the world.

Major Daughtrey was a native of Del Rio Texas. He attended Texas A & M,
but left after his sophomore year to earn a commission in the Air Force.
Since there is question whether he will be able to fly again. He hopes
to return to school to get his degree in mathematics.

Robert Daughrey retired from the United States Air Force as a Lt. Colonel.
He has remarried and he and his wife Vickie reside in New Mexico.

Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty on 27 August 1944, in the vicinity of Montelimar, France.
As his platoon advanced upon the enemy positions; the leading scout was fired upon and 2d Lt. Gregg (then a Tech. Sgt.) immediately put his machineguns into action to cover the advance of the riflemen. The Germans, who were at close range, threw hand grenades at the riflemen, killing some and wounding 7. Each time a medical aid man attempted to reach the wounded, the Germans fired at him. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, 2d Lt. Gregg took 1 of the light .30-caliber machineguns, and firing from the hip, started boldly up the hill with the medical aid man following him. Although the enemy was throwing hand grenades at him, 2d Lt. Gregg remained and fired into the enemy positions while the medical aid man removed the 7 wounded men to safety. When 2d Lt. Gregg had expended all his ammunition, he was covered by 4 Germans who ordered him to surrender. Since the attention of most of the Germans had been diverted by watching this action, friendly riflemen were able to maneuver into firing positions. One, seeing 2d Lt. Gregg's situation, opened fire on his captors. The 4 Germans hit the ground and thereupon 2d Lt. Gregg recovered a machine pistol from one of the Germans and managed to escape to his other machinegun positions. He manned a gun, firing at his captors, killed 1 of them and wounded the other. This action so discouraged the Germans that the platoon was able to continue its advance up the hill to achieve its objective. The following morning, just prior to daybreak, the Germans launched a strong attack, supported by tanks, in an attempt to drive Company L from the hill. As these tanks moved along the valley and their foot troops advanced up the hill, 2d Lt. Gregg immediately ordered his mortars into action. During the day by careful observation, he was able to direct effective fire on the enemy, inflicting heavy casualties. By late afternoon he had directed 600 rounds when his communication to the mortars was knocked out. Without hesitation he started checking his wires, although the area was under heavy enemy small arms and artillery fire. When he was within 100 yards of his mortar position, 1 of his men informed him that the section had been captured and the Germans were using the mortars to fire on the company. 2d Lt. Gregg with this man and another nearby rifleman started for the gun position where he could see 5 Germans firing his mortars. He ordered the 2 men to cover him, crawled up, threw a hand grenade into the position, and then charged it. The hand grenade killed 1, injured 2, 2d Lt. Gregg took the other 2 prisoners, and put his mortars back into action.

Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action above and beyond the call of duty.
On 24 December 1942, near Buna, New Guinea, Sgt. Gruennert was second in command of a platoon with a mission to drive through the enemy lines to the beach 600 yards ahead. Within 150 yards of the objective, the platoon encountered 2 hostile pillboxes. Sgt. Gruennert advanced alone on the first and put it out of action with hand grenades and rifle fire, killing 3 of the enemy. Seriously wounded in the shoulder, he bandaged his wound under cover of the pillbox, refusing to withdraw to the aid station and leave his men. He then, with undiminished daring, and under extremely heavy fire, attacked the second pillbox. As he neared it he threw grenades which forced the enemy out where they were easy targets for his platoon. Before the leading elements of his platoon could reach him he was shot by enemy snipers. His inspiring valor cleared the way for his platoon which was the first to attain the beach in this successful effort to split the enemy position.
