KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Nine out of 10 eligible Afghans have signed up for landmark October elections, the United Nations said Sunday, a resounding endorsement of a democratic experiment supposed to help Afghanistan turn its back on years of debilitating war.

What a huge statement for American foreign policy ( even if the stats are from the U.N.) All the media sources have been saying that the US is crazy to think that the rest of the world is interested in democracy...but from the voter registration, it looks like Afghanistan is VERY interested... What a brave people to stand up to vote knowing that even going to register could cost them their lives. Sounds like the birth of freedom to me.

Looking forward to the hanging chad brouhaha. Can't we send Altoast2000 to monitor something?

A somewhat related story. The President greets members of the Aghani girl's soccer team visiting the U.S. for a youth tournament:

I salute the Afghans, and I hope every red-blooded American does as well. This needs to get more press than it's getting. Maybe we need to have Karzai over again for a joint session of Congress, for him to tell them about the Afghan bravery, resolve and commitment to the Democratic process.

Yeah, really! Al is so committed to making sure every vote counts, he can go over there and monitor that.

Also send that representative that requested the U.N. to monitor our elections.

Duck, Al!! Incoming!

From the Marion Star article you posted:

A member of the South Korean Po Hang team, Stephany Hwang, a 14-year-old swimmer, was happy about Bush's appearance.

"He's almost an international president. I'm really very excited," she said.

Saw that. It gave me chuckle.
