Northrop Grumman Newport News celebrated its first submarine christening in nearly a decade when Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States and the ships sponsor, broke a bottle of American-made sparkling wine across the hull of the Virginia-class submarine Texas (SSN 775). Also pictured is U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) and Tom Schievelbein, Northrop Grumman Newport News president.

Until the REAL battleships arrived, lol.
One of these boats could take out most of Old Europe.

SSNs are attack boats, ie hunter-killers that go after other subs and major surface combatants, tho they could be armed with nuclear tipped land attack cruise missiles I suppose. SSBNs or boomers are the missile boats.

It doesn't carry any nuclear weapons.
To: Strategerist
It doesn't carry any nuclear weapons.Don't fool yourself. On the record, of course, it carries no nuclear weapons. With a wrench, you can screw in a W50 warhead into the tomahawks, ADCAP mines, or Mk48 torpedos in less than 2 hours. Tomahawk warheads have to be installed in dock because they are in the VLS tubes and cant be opened while at sea. The torpedos, mines, etc can be worked in inside the sub. The warhead is about the size of a 17" CRT monitor.

I stand corrected...you are right. The missile boats are Ohio class, based mostly in King's Bay, no?

Sure glad they work for us...

There was a time when battleships were given names of the states and the subs werte named for fish.Actually, I was going to ask something about that as well... I was under the impression that the most recent classes of subs were that SSBNs (the ballistic missile subs, like the Ohio class) were named for states, and the SSNs (the hunter/killers, like the Los Angeles class) were named for cities.
Is this because of the ability of the newer subs to fire cruise missiles?
