CHAPLAINS DIARY Chaplain Searle is deployed to OSAN AB, So. Korea for a year. He shared with me via email the following incident in the missionary ministry the Lord has given him in your Air Force. Please remember Tom in prayer as well as your other military chaplains who share similar opportunities to touch lives with the love of the Lord. I just got out of a counseling situation a few minutes ago that I wanted to share. A young man from the one of my squadrons just found out that his older brother hanged himself and the First Sergeant called to bring him by. As the young man and I were talking, I asked if he was feeling overwhelmed with emotion and grief. He said that this was not all he was dealing with. He continued to tell me that he has been back from his mid-tour leave for 6 days, and while he was home his wife told him that she wanted a divorce. They have two children. He also has a tumor that needs to be removed which is undergoing some testing, he is trying to cancel his follow-on assignment to Aviano so he can get back to the states and try to work through his family situation. That may or may not go through. He is also having trouble getting a promotion testing date. Needless to say, he said that everywhere he turns, there is no hope. I asked if he had turned upwards, and he nodded his head and said that's what he needed. I gave him a bible and when I asked if I could pray with him, he said "I really need it" and put his arms around me and cried on my shoulder as we prayed. His supervisor was in the office with us and cried also. These are tough blue collar men! What a privilege it is to stand in the place of Jesus and offer His compassion and hope to people who have nowhere else to turn. We have the truth, the light, the joy, the hope; but it seems that so often people are not willing to accept it until their pain drives them to it. Just a quick snapshot of how my day ended. God's blessings to you,
Chaplain Tom Searle (USAF) |

KENNETH W. NORTH
Lieutenant Colonel - United States Air Force
Shot Down: August 1, 1966
Released: March 4, 1973
Colonel North is a native of Connecticut. He entered the USAF pilot training
program following his graduation from the University of Connecticut in 1953.
His first overseas assignment was in Japan where he spent three years.
Following a stateside tour of duty he was assigned to Hickam Field in Hawaii.
Soon he was in Okinawa, flying F-105 D's. Eight months later he volunteered
for duty at KORAT AB in Thailand.
He flew thirty-three combat missions over North Vietnam and was shot down
north of Hanoi in August 1966.
"This period started a new life for me when I was to realize how brutal and
deceitful man could be and how hard and how often my faith in my country was
to be tested. The knowledge that my country was a great country and that
communism was a cancer helped me keep that faith. The strong, unshakeable
desire to come home with honor allowed me to do just that."
Colonel North plans to remain in the USAF and to stay in the tactical fighter
business. He is living with his wife, Carol, and four daughters in Wellfleet,
Massachusetts. Carol was very active in the POW-MIA effort where she helped to
improve conditions for the prisoners after 1969.
To the children of America, Colonel North says, "You have a right to be proud
of more than just American fighting men, you can be proud of America. In spite
of some of our ills which are too quickly and too frequently pointed out, we
are the greatest nation on earth. Be proud and help to build an even greater
country."
December 1996
Kenneth North retired from the United States Air Force as a Brig General. He
and his wife Carol reside in Maryland.

This is a fly=by post of sorts - I promised to take the kids swimming, so I gotta make good on that. I just had to tell you all that Josh was in church this morning, in uniform and looking GREAT!! I got to give him a big hug and tell him thanks! I appreciate all your prayers for him while he was in Iraq! He had built up something like 79 days terminal leave, so although his time isn't up until October, he is essentially done.
