The Democratic presidential ticket of John Kerry and John Edwards worked Friday to spread the energy, beginning a national bus tour hours after the Boston convention.
Kerry, whose convention speech emphasized national security and foreign policy, said in an interview with The Associated Press that he would put Osama bin Laden on trial in U.S. courts.
That would ensure the "fastest, surest route" to a murder conviction if the terrorist mastermind is captured while he is president, Kerry said.
"I want him tried for murder in New York City, and in Virginia and in Pennsylvania," where planes hijacked by al-Qaida operatives crashed Sept. 11, 2001, he said.
His "Believe in America" road tour got off to a bumpy start Friday.
A sparse crowd showed up at a morning rally in Boston to begin the 21-state tour. On board were the Kerry family, the Edwards family and an entourage.
Kerry admitted he was dragging. "I am longing to have my head hit a pillow," he said.
Highways were blocked from Boston to Scranton as the campaign's 10 buses and support vehicles lumbered westward.
In Newburg, N.Y., they made an unscheduled stop to celebrate John and Elizabeth Edwards' 27th anniversary.
The couple observed their anniversary tradition of a meal at Wendy's, a nod to their early married days when it was all they could afford.
Kerry joined them inside and spied a table of Marines. But when he struck up a conversation, the Marines answered tersely and expressed irritation.
"He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here to shake our hands," said one, who did not give his name.
Later, at a stop in Harrisburg, Pa., Edwards turned his sights on Bush, who had criticized Kerry. "Today, the president went out and spoke for the first time since John spoke (at the convention), and here we go again," Edwards said. "The same old thing, relentless negative attacks on John Kerry.
"They are trying to take this campaign for the highest office in the land down the lowest possible road."
Jon Bannis was on the train when it came to a sudden stop. He initially thought it had run over a bag."When I got off, all these people were screaming," he said. "That's devastating seeing that."
Freddy Terrazas said he was waiting to cross Main at Rusk when he saw the man get struck, hit his head on the bricks that line the track and get dragged a couple of yards underneath the 98,500-pound train. Terrazas said the train, which had just departed the Main Street Square platform on the previous block, was beeping its horn in an apparent warning to the man standing atop the shrubs.
Pervis Richmond, manager of Domino's Pizza near the crash scene, ran out to help.
"He had a pulse when I got there, and then the train's hydraulic system dropped on him," said Richmond, an Alief volunteer firefighter.

That "unscheduled stop" at Wendy's was vetted out 3 days BEFORE they stopped. I read it in a FR post from a freeper who lives there.
Really? I havnt heard about this at all. but then again with the kids hanging around all summer usurping my Rush fix iam not surprised that i missed all sorts of tidbits
.On the other hand the kerrys seem to have that sham marriage thing down as well the clintons dontch think?
neither one of the kerrys really seem to be fond of the other she is always pushing the man away in photos ive seen and he seems to be sucking a ripe lemon at the thought of kissing her.
of course I have a strong urge to KACK KACK whenever I see them on the tube thank goodness for radio!
The marine should be decorated for patience. I would have liked to hear what the other patrons had to say after seeing this "exchange".
Did they tell her it was legume pate'?
You mean ue didn't bring somedody else's wallet out.
I hope so.
And we're longing to have your head hit the sidewalk, too, Lurch.
Bingo. Since THEY have no record to run on, the only thing they have is Bush-hatred fueling thier supports. As you pointed out, they will spend an hour ripping the President and calling him every name in the book, then call for "civility". That will be the clip the media plays of Kerry/Edwards, then Bush/Cheney will be shown "attacking" thw oh-so-civil candidates.
Puke.....
Ouch!
The train here has a fairly short route also. It just started operating last month. No one's been killed yet but one could bet it's going to happen sooner or later. They're replacing crossing gates like crazy as people keep tearing them off with their cars.
One bozo bicyclist went around a gate and beat the train only to be struck by a car as he turned onto the road.
