Rep. Phyllis Kahn faces a misdemeanor theft charge for snatching campaign literature last week.

New Hope city attorney Steve Sondrall said he decided on Friday to go forward with the charge after considering the matter for a week.

The Minneapolis DFLer has apologized to Republican House member Lynne Osterman for taking her campaign brochures from some New Hope doorsteps. Kahn replaced them with pieces from Osterman's DFL opponent, Sandra Peterson.

The fact that she will be charged is news to me. Was this posted earlier today? The decision to prosecute came today.

It's old news in the sense that she did the crime a couple weeks ago.

Kahn's husband, Donald,...said Kahn hadn't been notified of the charge as of Friday, adding that he was ``amazed'' to hear the charge was being brought. ``The best I can tell you is the New Hope city Police Department seems to be interested in publicity,'' he said.

The best I can tell you is that she's a RAT who broke the law and betrayed the public trust, and she should have been brought up on campaign tampering charges as well.

While I can't cite a source, I'm sure I read this before. Maybe I'm wrong.

I worked in Phyllis Kahn's first campaign for office some 30 years ago +/-2yr. Her main primary opposition (it was a district where GOP registrations could stuff a phone booth) was a rascal named Matt Stark, a former pres. of the MCLU (Minnesota chapter of ACLU). Ironically, she was a victim of Stark campaign workers (some say Stark himself was seen) stealing her campaign literature and vandalizing her supporters' lawn signs. I don't think any charges were pressed; victory was the sweetest revenge.

Her husband, Don, is (or was) a prof. of mathematics at the University of Minn. I think she's still a "safe" candidate in a "safe" district, so this may be embarassing, but not fatal to her re-election prospects. If I still know her at all, my guess is that if the case is pressed, she will probably plead guilty to a negotiated charge and pay a fine (especially if reminded of the history of her original campaign, where she was the victim rather than the perp).

Good! Kahn deserves the max punishment. The Dems think they can get away with this crap everyday and if caught, just smile, apologize and hope it goes away.

They caught her butt...that's the only thing she's sorry about.

Her district isn't the issue. The district in question (where she was helping another candidate) is a swing district. As I recall, last election the Republican won by 65 votes, and the election before that the Dem won by 200 votes.

Every vote is critical there, and the Dems are desperate to take back the Minnesota house, something they tend to view as rightfully theirs - they can't stand the fact that the Pubbies have a majority there.
