Quick Question: What is a .50 cal BMG rifle?

Posted on 07/30/2004 8:17:31 AM PDT by Hillary's Lovely Legs

I am filling out a survey about gun ownership and have been asked about a .50 cal BMG rifle.

Could you please explain to me what this is and what it's used for?

Thank you

It's use depends on the shooter but is most useful for shooting in which long range or high power is wanted.

The recoil is enough that some type of means, such as muzzle brakes or extra weight, is usually necessary to reduce it.

It's the favored weapon of criminals for long range hold ups.

From everything I have been reading about it it's a sniper rifle. I can't imagine shooting a deer from 1000 yards.

I only know about a limited number of handguns and shot guns.

I have shot skeet with a shotgun, and targets with a handgun.

I support the second ammendment, but before I can answer if the .50 cal BMG is a fine private citizen gun, I think that it's important to know it's practical usage.

Other Freepers answered your question as to what it is. It is a very serious weapon, no doubt. Why are you being asked about it?

the 50cal Browning Machine Gun has been around for a while in one form or another, mounted in planes, tanks, jeeps, crew serve carried etc. A great weapon to fire and big enough to knock down an elephant.

Any rifle that fires the .50 BMG round.

It is a fairly big round, effective at long ranges.

Some of the military uses it as a sniper rifle. Among target shooters, it is the preferred round for very long range shooting....it flies relatively straight at relatively longer ranges than other rounds. For example, the 1000 yard records have all been .50 BMG lately. The bullet itself is heavy, so wind effects are minimized.

It is generally not used for hunting because it makes for a heavy weapon. Some places that offer long range shots use it (plains/savannah sometimes mountains), but in most hunting situations (forest/brush) its range advantages are wasted.

You can go to fcsa.org (fifty caliber shooters association) for more info.

Donnt let the wise@$$es snow you; "BMG" stands for "Browning Machine Gun" -- as in the venerable M2 or "Ma Deuce".

Here is an example of a .50BMG rifle:

Sloth, some of those descriptions are pretty accurate!

I have never shot one, but have seen it in action.
