Quick Question: What is a .50 cal BMG rifle?

Posted on 07/30/2004 8:17:31 AM PDT by Hillary's Lovely Legs

I am filling out a survey about gun ownership and have been asked about a .50 cal BMG rifle.

Could you please explain to me what this is and what it's used for?

Thank you

From everything I have been reading about it it's a sniper rifle. I can't imagine shooting a deer from 1000 yards.

I've never heard of anyone using it for hunting. There are, however, people who go out to the desert with them to target shoot from long distances.

I'm sure the military has something larger than a 10-round mag, and I'll be looking to snag a few and put the puny 10-rounder into my double-door, Canon® gun safe.

I have 20-round mags for my AR-10, and 30- and 40-round mags for the Class III AR-15s. I also have a 29-round mag (.40 cal) for my Glock 32/.357 SIG; its original price was $19. I paid $125 for it.

Net net: I'm gonna have stacks of mags which'll be worth a small fraction of what I paid for them. Depressing. Oh well, at least the AWB is sunsetting! That's a good thing.

LOL!
Oh, yeah! I like the "bigger hammer" site!

On any other rifle besides the .50, I'd say the Leupold would be the perfect scope. They don't make better glass than a Leupold.
I would be concerned about it's durability on the .50.

After my high priced Springfield disintegrated, I'm leery about any scope that I don't know to be proven to stand up to the concussion.
Springfield fixed it, but who wants to remount a new scope every hundred rounds or so?

I'm going with a Night Force 12-42x56 NXS only because it has proven that it will hold up.

At any rate, you've got a treat coming when you squeeze the trigger of that Barrett for the first time!

"The same thing be said for machineguns too."

That's the reason a Ma Deuce is my next gun purchase.

Thanks TC; I've bookmarked it and will spend some serious time there this evening.

One of my garden center & nursery customers has an M82A1 and we've gone up to Lewisberry PA's 1,000yd range over the past few months, on Sunday, and you're right: it's awesome! I can't wait to join the .50cal BMG Club, and have my own unit.

If you ever get out to these parts, FReepmail me, and we can play with with some of my guns. I have a private range here on my 20ac complex.

I'm still working on the abandoned gravel pit gun range.
It's only about ten miles from my place at Rock Island.

I'd really love to shoot with you.
I've got a few other toys, too!

I'll keep it in mind.
Thanks!

I may take you up on that. We'll be in Gettysburg late September of 2005 for agility trials held by the Golden Retriever Club of America. We're planning on staying with friends in Mechanicsburg.

Lewisberry isn't that far -- maybe we'll let the girls go alone to the show one day whilst the boys go shootin'.

Gunny's shot was made with a M2HB on single shot. That fact makes it the most remarkable shot ever made.

I was not aware that the .50 was fitted with a water jacket. The .30 yes, but not the .50. Any sources for info?

When that caliber tumbles and finally strikes its target...

If the round is tumbling, you will not hit your target, period. A round does not tumble when it hits the target either.

I was thinking about getting a Glock 21 to replace my Glock 30 as my primary carry piece, but I think I'll just get a 15-round Glock 21 mag in September and just carry that as my second mag, for a total of 26 rounds of .45ACP on my person instead of 21.

I decided to always carry a spare mag after a friend told me her tale of four young toughs who approached her after driving past three times shouting lewdness, and her "oh crap" moment when she remembered she only had one 14-round magazine, having left her spare at home.

Predators travel in packs.

Fortunately they figured out what she was doing when she unzipped her Galco fanny pack and went to draw, and they all immediately jumped back in the car and ran.

It is? I (and a lot of people) went to thehighroad.org when firingline shut down. I wonder if my logon still works. Thanks!
