China Warns of Military Clash with Taiwan by 2008
Reuters ^ | July 29, 2004

BEIJING (Reuters) - China may attack Taiwan if the island's President Chen Shui-bian pushes ahead with a plan for a new constitution by 2008, the China Daily on Friday quoted a top Taiwan affairs official as saying. The remarks by Vice Minister of the Taiwan Affairs Office Wang Zaixi were the latest tough words by Beijing toward the democratically ruled island, which it regards as a breakaway province that must be reclaimed by force if necessary.

Beijing sees Chen's goal of adopting a new constitution in 2008 as a drive toward a formal declaration of independence, and has been preparing for a possible military showdown with Taiwan.

"New tensions and even a serious crisis in the cross-Straits situation may arise if Chen obstinately pursues his timetable," the China Daily quoted Wang as saying in an interview.

"We cannot completely rule out the possibility though it is not at all what we hoped for," Wang said of military conflict. Both sides have held war games this month amid simmering political tensions.

I bet the collapse of the Three Gorges dam would be a catastrophe for China. It would greatly interfere with an invasion of Taiwan.

That's okay. We've decided to finance it, so I guess that's what we want.

Not to worry!

John Kerry is willing to use force when necessary!

He'll be right there to help invade Taiwan.

{shudder}

Swell, now if they can give us a month and a day, we can have a bunch of fully loaded nuclear subs sailing around China's coastal waters, orbiting weapons systems hovering above, mines in the straits, fully burned-in Aegis boats and jets for Taiwan's forces..

In my Dragon's Fury Series of novels, events lead to hostilities in 2006.

But it might kill a lot of innocent people. On the other hand, there are probably a lot of ethnic groups in China that didn't want to be part of the People's Republic to begin with.

Let's just give the Taiwanese the bomb. After all, the Chinese have no problem supplying Pakistan and North Korea.

I would like to see Taiwan destroy that communist rathole, anyway.

perhaps.

yes and no.

The leaders in Beijing ARE WELL ABLE

to ignore for however long they want to cordone off the area with troops--to ignore the chaos around the Gorges dam and even the massive flooding. It would be difficult and troublesome--but all they have to do is keep killing dissidents.

They could focus on Taiwan more or less exclusively if they put their minds to ignoring death, chaos and destruction else where. Not easy--but for them--doable and much preferrable to losing face over Taiwan. Their pride is worth hundreds of millions of Mainlander deaths to them--and certainly the 22 million or so Taiwanese deaths--which could include my own by then. I sure hope to be back there by then.

There was a thread here that due to shoddy construction the dam will fail. It's not a question of if, but when.
China will use it as a pretense to attack Taiwan.

Because the books deal directly with the subject and were written as a warning about the same. If we do not wake up to the danger that the PRC poses, and treat them, starting now, economically they way that Reagan treated the Evil Empire of his time (the Soviets), we will end having hell to pay, and it will be paid in blood.

Having consulted with a number of major firms about outsorucing to China and elsewhere and recommending to them that they keep some form of production capbility either here in the CONUS or at the very least away from the Pacific Rim, I have seen directly what is going on over there both as the PRC woos and mesmerizes corporate executives and as those same executives discard such as advise as I have mentioned. The situation for us economically grows more and more disconcerting each day.

In addition, the PRC is using the profits from our folly to embark on a massive military buildup which will threaten us directly one day. I speak of this in the article, The Rising Sea Dragon in Asia. The book series speaks directly to all of this.

That's all.

I think you're right. The Three Gorges Dam could collapse on its own and the communists would have an excuse to blame it on Taiwan and start a war.

Yes, China has proliferated the bomb to Pakistan, North Korea, Iran, and has been hawking it to others.

China is doing it's best to develop a firm foothold in Africa. It right now has a significant presence at the Panama Canal.

We helped China perfect it's ICBM and MIRV capabilities. We even let them have some of our nuclear secrets.

Warran Hatch actually had the gaul to propose that we gift China with our entire Patent Database.

Honestly, if our founding fathers were still alive, about 80% of our current leaders would have joined Benedict Arnold by now.
