Tear down the wall!

That was the lyrical message in 1979 from British rock band Pink Floyd, and it's now the message of the group's co-founder Roger Waters, who is looking to demolish the concrete barrier in Israel.

Waters, who has since left the band, is launching "the Writings on the Wall" campaign with his famous line "we don't need no thought control" scribbled under his signature on an eight-foot replica of the fence.

"The poverty inflicted by the wall has been devastating for Palestinians," said Waters. "It has kept children from their schools, the sick from proper medical care and continues to destroy the Palestinian economy."

Waters is the first of a handful of British celebrities to sign up for the campaign, which is sponsored by the London-based anti-poverty group War on Want.

For those outside Great Britain, a virtual wall will soon be active online where the public can "paint" their own messages.

As WorldNetDaily reported last month, the wall is being credited for a huge drop in terrorism in Israel.

At this time last year, there were 20 suicide bombings killing 141, while 2002 saw 25 such attacks in which 147 Israelis were killed. So far this year, there have been only two bombings in Israel proper, killing 19.

Israel says its tactics clearly are working and that life in the Jewish state may gradually be restored to the way it was before the violence started in 2000. The security fence completed in Gaza and the one being constructed in the West Bank are credited with keeping suicide bombers out, and raids in Palestinian areas and targeted killings of top terrorist commanders seem to be putting Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades on the run and unable to orchestrate attacks.

With 23 million copies sold, the original "Wall" concept album from 1979 is the third best-selling album of all time, surpassed only by the Eagles' "Greatest Hits 1971-75," and Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

In July 1990, to commemorate the demolition of the Berlin Wall, Waters staged a massive live performance of "The Wall" in Berlin, featuring artists such as Cyndi Lauper, The Scorpions, Thomas Dolby, Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor, and Bryan Adams.

Truly, Pink Floyd must be from the dark side of the wall!

I liked everything from "Dark Side of the Moon" to "The Wall". "Final Cut" and "Momentary Lapse of Reason" are okay but not the same quality IMO. I've yet to hear some of the early Syd Barrett stuff which I've always been curious about.

Waters can't seem to grasp the distinction between a wall built by a totalitarian dictatorship designed specifically to keep their slave-population IN and a wall built by a nation completely surrounded by Jihadist enemies designed specifically to keep terrorists OUT.

Israel says its tactics clearly are working and that life in the Jewish state may gradually be restored to the way it was before the violence started in 2000.

And this is precisely why many people are so upset.

Poor Roger, not having enough Jews killed seems to upset him.

JMO here, the Syd stuff is great if you have patience. I am partial to the string of albums they recorded from around 1971 (maybe '72) up to "Wish You Were Here," especially "Meddle" and "Obscured By Clouds," a not-so-easy to find soundtrack they did...just after Syd went crazy and Gilmour joined the band.

Easily my favorite band, always has been, always will be.

IGAF

I've got to ask for the meaning here because its one I've never seen. The first thing I came up with was "I gagged and farted" and I did a spit take on my monitor.

I thought only "rednecks" believed that.

I'd like to hear that stuff sometime. "Wish You Were Here" is great.

"Meddle" is an easy one to find and definitely worth a listen. Several listens. Addictive, like so much of their music. Its not as polished as "Dark Side" but not nearly as experimental as their earlier stuff (although the song "Echoes" is 23 minutes long and most of "Seamus" is sung by a dog). They just don't make music like that anymore.

"Animals" is too often overlooked. I love it, especially Dogs.

At the back of my mind, when we bought our current home, I knew it won out over all other possibilities because we have a view of a power plant similar to Battersea from our front yard.

No flying pigs, though. I keep looking.

Agree completely with you on Animals, also my favorite Floyd album (guess that last word shows my age). I bet Roger considers us right-wing nuts to be the Dogs (merciless greedy capitalists) rather than the Pigs (lying, sanctimonious right-wing politicians) or Sheep (everyone else). At least we can agree on the sheep :-)

Folks, this is nothing new for him. I love his music, but his politics have always been well beyond left wing. Sadly, that's true of most of the rock bands I grew up loving - the Clash, Springsteen, etc. All full blown socialists.

The one exception? Rush - true Ayn Rand libertarians (listen to 2112 for a great Randian piece).

"Holy herb"? BS, it's just weed.
