Dem Delegates Speculate on Kerry Cabinet Posts

WOODBRIDGE, NJ (Talon News) -- With the 4-day Democratic National Convention coming to a close in Boston, delegates who have had to sit through speech after speech and attend group-sponsored workshop after workshop have looked at other ways to break the monotonous schedule: predicting and speculating.

One of the topics on delegates' minds was staffing a cabinet in a Kerry/Edwards administration. With the election still months away, traditionally, candidates do not reveal any plans for posts in their new administration, but that didn't stop delegates from airing their wish list of choices.

Daniel P. Troy, Ohio Delegate and a member of the Lake County Board of Commissioners wished for General Wesley Clark to be named Secretary of Defense and Dick Gephardt be put in charge of the Labor Department. He also added that he would support Dennis Kucinich in the cabinet if Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry would create a "Department of Peace."

Steven Reece, an African-American delegate from Cincinnati, seemed less concerned that the best people receive positions as much as the choices be politically correct. "I don't think we can gain the respect of the world unless we have a Cabinet that is a rainbow, because the majority of the world is of color."

Without having a specific cabinet position in mind, Resse sang the praises of Tennessee Congressman Harold Ford, who is also African-American.

"Harold Ford would be a good guy," Reese said. "Harold Ford would be an excellent choice."

And of course with delegates being represented from every State, everyone had their own favorite like New Mexico Delegate Rosemary Gibson who has high hopes for New Mexico's Governor Bill Richardson whom she says would make a good secretary of state.

"Richardson can get our allies back in our good graces. He's been secretary of energy," Reese said. "He has connections abroad."

As was the case with Steven Reese, NARAL Pro-Choice America volunteer Jessica Copeland, a law student at Northeastern University, was more concerned with political correctness then with the right people being named.

"Lots of women, I'm tired of seeing a bunch of old, white men," Copeland said.

Democrat activists chimed in as well, with clear opinions on who they would like to see leading positions that will oversee their causes. United Steelworkers official, Ann Flener from Pittsburg, was unwavering in her choice for Labor Secretary.

"Definitely Richard Gephardt for Labor because he's been right with labor as far as standing up for workers' rights," Flener said.

Other names mentioned for key cabinet positions were Howard Dean, Hillary Clinton and Al Gore.

Come November the only choices Kerry will have for cabinet posts will be oak or pine.

No doubt it would look like the bar scene from Star Wars. A true freak show, just like the clinton cabinet.

So, in a hypothetical world where Kerry wins (I DON'T believe that will happen), who would the ornamental Republican in the cabinet be? Any chance McCain is Sec. of Defense and we could replace him in the Senate with a real Republican like J.D. Hayworth?

If they get in say goodbye to this country. With Kerry #1 most liberal voting record in the Senate and Edwards #4 most liberal voting record there will be the most liberal possible judges and cabinet members appointed.

Agree with Kerry's wife: Dems are putrid.

I hope Kerry picks this one and runs with it. LOL.

Democrat - it's in the dictionary.

It's between "delusional" and "dimwit."

The fact that Richard Holbrooke told Chriss Mathhews that he would lobby for secretary of state is PLENTY of reason to vote against Kerry.

I think the most telling part of this Democrat's scheme is the post for Former NATO Gen. Clark. How can one be serious about defeating terrorist with a nomination of a former general that negotiated with an Al-Qaeda affiliated group the KLA. The KLA was financed and trained with Bin Laden's group Al Qaeda and is known to have killed 100,000 Kosovo Christians yet the only person we hear about on trial for war crimes is Milosevic?
