Polls show youth leaning to Bush
Jacksonville Times-Union ^ | 7-28-04 | Matt Towery

As the Democrats bask in the media limelight this week at the party's national convention, it's probably a good time to revisit a topic I recently took a light jab at in this column space. Polls in a number of states and in the nation as a whole show that a surprisingly disproportionate amount of President Bush's support for re-election is coming from younger voters -- an often fickle voting bloc.

I think/hope some younger folks may have developed genuine conservative leanings in reaction to the increasingly socialist and secularist society the older generations have brought about.

And remember that it's the Democrats leading the call for the draft.

"A disproportionate number of kids who would have been young Democrats ended their short lives as medical waste in abortuary dumpsters."

Great point, that has to make a difference over time. Not that I would support that to win elections, I had no choice in the matter.

They have killed millions of their own voters.

"My comment wasn't so much directed to you as it was generic. Just thinking out loud."

Cool! Don't let me stop you.

Just wait until school starts and the NEA's political pressure is felt.

I also think the internet has a lot to do with it. The internet can answer almost any question, give all the facts, and show every side of a story. So, younger people don't have to rely on the alphabet networks for their information. They can get all their facts together, and then make up their own mind; and when people have facts instead of editorials, I think they lean right.

Great to hear! Historically though the 18 - 22 had been the weakest voting group.

It's an anti-Moore backlash. Moore, on campuses, is an "establishment figure" due to the leftist (I almost typed "laughtist!") near-monopoly. The youts are rebelling against the obvious attempt at manipulation from the "Master of Deceit".

Probably the moment that stands out to me most in my childhood is sitting in my 2nd grade classroom, and a teacher came in and told mine that JFK was killed. My teacher sat down and started to cry at her desk.

Major world events have a drastic effect on young ones, because they affect the way they foreverafter look at life.

I think one of the biggest reasons for their enthusiam for voting comes from them getting news from the Internet, rather than the ABSCBSNBSCNNBSMSNBS and major newspapers. My 18 yr old and several of her frinds lurk on FR and some are possibily FReepers. They can see the Hate Bush meida blitz and cannot stand the RAT party.

It's also the 'security mom' effect, so to speak. We want a President who will give us the chance to grow up and lead normal lives in a post-9/11 world. Or at least as normal as we can get. We're also somewhat resentful of the earlier generations for giving us STDs and forcing the acceptance of homosexuality upon us.

One could also say that we're just an anti-hippie backlash.

I have been talking with a number of 18 to 26 year olds recently. What I have discovered astonished me because of the stereotypes we have of young people as the gimme generation. I can assure you the young people I have talked with are not part of a gimme generation -- and they know that the Democrats are the gimme party.

So what did I learn?

First, young people understand taxes paid vastly exceed value returned, particularly at the state level here in Massachusetts. The associate taxation with the Democrats.

Second, they understand that even if they do not progress upward in terms of real dollars, by the time they are 40 simple cost of living raises (starting at $25k where they pay about 15% of $5k, or about $750, in taxes, they will be making (assuming about 3.2% inflation) about $45k. That money will have no more purchasing power than it does today, but taxes will tak a much deeper bite. That is, they understand progressive taxation is what prevents creates poverty.

Third, they understand John Kerry is a poser.

Fourth, they dislike the sue-to-get-rich mentality fostered by trial lawyers -- and they hate being lectured by trial lawyers about how they help people recover damages for injuries. Most understand trial lawyers more often play to the sympathies of the jurors and tell tall tales concerning about the plaintiff's plight.

This article isn't saying much people. The younger people in this poll are actual Southerners and most Cubans. The older people are Yankee carpetbaggers from New York and New Jersey. They are the only reason a state like Florida is even remotely competitive.
