Kerry 'Bunny' Photo Brings Back Memories of Dukakis

BOSTON (Talon News) -- There is a rule in politics, almost as old as the profession itself, which states a political candidate should never be photographed wearing unusual clothing or hats. Sen. John Kerry apparently forgot the rule on Monday as he toured the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, FL.

Kerry was accompanied on his visit by former astronauts -- current Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) and former Sen. John Glenn (D-OH).

The Senator donned an aqua "safe suit," complete with headgear, to enter a NASA space shuttle orbiter. Photos were taken to document the visit by NASA photographers and were made public by NASA (see photo).

The picture led to comparisons such as "Spaceman Kerry's goofy photo flub," a headline in the New York Post, which suggested that Kerry resembled the sperm character played by Woody Allen in "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex."

The Boston Herald chose to print it with the headline, "Boston, we've got a problem," an apparent reference to the Apollo 13 moon mission.

On Tuesday, photos of Sen. Kerry, placed next to the 1988 photo of Michael Dukakis, taken in a tank, and captioned "Earth to Kerry" were circulating on the Internet. Democratic sources say they are a Republican "dirty trick."

The famous tank photo of Dukakis was intended to make him look tough on defense but ended up inspiring comparisons of a little boy playing G.I. Joe. At the time, it was credited as part of the reason that Dukakis blew a 17 point lead.

Democrats are blaming Republicans for the photos becoming public but a NASA spokesman told Fox News that the Kerry team saw the photos before they were placed on a NASA website (web site).

When asked his opinion of the photo, Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie grinned and said, "We just thought it was a great photo."

No doubt, he was for the photo before he was against it.

Maybe crawling your belly to Dear/Deer hunt works on the East Coast Bambis.

You would never get a shot off out west where I have hunted, crawling on your belly.

Looks like Kennedy Space Center's website no longer has the widely publicized shot. But the best one that is still on a NASA site is this one

I still think this is the first sighting of a

light blue Teletubby.

Seriously, when I first saw this photo, I didn't know who
it was in the picture. When told hours later it was Kerry,
the reaction was similar to Chairman Gillespie's.

Kerry's TeleTubby Moment ... or maybe the TeleKerry photo.
A Great Picture... LOL ... and now it's a "dirty trick"...
Some dastardly 'Pubbie lured him into dressing up for this
photo op.

Between that, and Kerry's "Pitch That Fell Short" on Sunday,
this campaign will not have any "bounce" this week.
