34 months vs. 444 days: There Jimmy Carter goes again, blaming America for his failures

If one were forced to choose low point of Jimmy Carter's presidency, it might be his July 15, 1979, "national malaise" speech. The country was suffering under inflation, recession, and an "energy crisis" — and we were about to undergo the national humiliation of the Iran hostage crisis. But what was Carter's diagnosis of America's problem?

It was not his policies that were to blame. The problem was the American people, who had suffered an inexplicable "crisis of confidence": "We can see this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our own lives and in the loss of a unity of purpose for our Nation. The erosion of our confidence in the future is threatening to destroy the social and the political fabric of America."

The problem, in his mind, was neither the discredited socialist programs of the left or his weak and vacillating leadership. The problem was that we weren't strong enough to make his policies work, so we had to be scolded for allowing ourselves to succumb to a "national malaise." (Carter didn't actually use that phrase, which was coined by one of his advisors, but the speech came to be known by that title.)

Last night, before the Democratic National Convention, Jimmy Carter repeated that historic feat of evasion.

My memory goes back to 1970, and 1979 was the worst year that I can remember. Thank you Jimmy Carter!

Carter: "Pardon me, I teeth and idiot daughter, got in the way of making sensible policy. I guess that's what you get when you ask a 12-year old what their views are on foreign policy and miliary preparedness."

Me: What are blithering idiot...and what bigger idiots we collectively are if we elect John Kerry, on the recommendation of Carter."

America is indeed to blame...for allowing this puke to continue to have any voice whatsoever in American politics.

If somebody high up the food chain in the GOP doesn't address Mr. Carter's assertions during their convention, they're missing a terrific opportunity to move a lot of "undecided" voters to the Right.

Carter was the one that gave North Korea it's nuclear technology.
Clinton was the one who coward to Korea's threats and updated their nuclear technology to what it is today.
The world is a much more dangerous place due to Democrats.
NEVER vote Democrat - unless you have a death wish!

"A cowardly attack on innocent civilians brought us an unprecedented level of cooperation and understanding around the world. But in just 34 months we have watched with deep concern as all this good will has been squandered by a virtually unbroken series of mistakes and miscalculations."

Translation.

If only America apologized for being a bully the rest of the world would have forgiven us while they are taking our money.

It makes me want to choke the $&!^ out of someone every time I hear this BS!

Carter...... what an embarassment. It's good they gave him an opportunity to speak at the convention. Let everyone see what the Dems are.

The same Jimmy Carter that offended the Islamic world by granting the Shah of Iran entrance into America even though the Shah's human rights violations were well known. I guess this passes for a friendly act to build understanding.

The same Jimmy Carter that unilaterally declared a boycott of the Moscow Games. Boy, that sure built international friends!

The same Jimmy Carter that unilaterally declared a boycott of the Moscow Games.

The same Jimmy Carter that depleted our access to fuel to the point where people had to stand in line for hours for their "quota" of gasoline.
The same Jimmy Carter that told us if we're too cold from having no fuel to put on a sweater and wear warmer socks!

I can remember trying to make ends meet about 1978. Sometimes they just didn't make it.

Hold on now.

Jimmy Carter is our most underrated ex-President but people are now coming around to the fact that he was one of our greatest Presidents.

I know this is true because Lanny Davis said it at the convention on Monday night.

Most Americans who bothered to watch saw Carter for what he is; a petty, bitter, mean-spirited, clueless fool. Dredging him up will remind Americans what a disaster his reign was. He's an abject lesson in not voting against someone. He was elected because voters were angry with Nixon & Ford. He offered nothing except not being them. He delivered nothing but humiliation and malaise.

Same situation today. JFnK offers nothing but a vessel to carry anti-Bush sentiment.

Kerry's campaign will be tied to Jimmy Carter in another way - John Edwards insipid smile. It matches then-candidate Carter's perfectly. Same empty suit, too.

LOL. The "democrap convention" has turned into a real lie fest, hasn't it? They're a laughing stock. That's sooo good for us. The 9/11 report is flying off the shelves at the book stores, exposing the democrats, yet they still stand behind their podiums and lie their lazy butts off anyway.
The few ( very, very few) democrat voters who may be watching are probably those who couldn't read a ballot anyway, let alone the 9/11 report.

"Democrat" means "Social parasite." I'm amazed how anyone would ever admit publicly they're nothing but a blood sucking leech on the nations taxpayers. How embarrassing that would be. How can they admit it without covering their heads in shame?
