Democrats Seek Reason for His Being Pushed Out
Archivist of the United States John W. Carlin was pushed by the White House in December to submit his resignation without being given any reason, Senate Democrats disclosed last week at a hearing to consider President Bush's nomination of his successor.
The Democrats said the White House should explain why it asked Carlin to resign. He said in a letter to Sen. Carl M. Levin (D-Mich.) that White House counsel Alberto R. Gonzales called him Dec. 5 and told him "the administration would like to appoint a new archivist." Carlin said, "I asked why, and there was no reason given."
Critics have suggested Bush may have wanted a new archivist to help keep his or his father's sensitive presidential records under wraps. Under the Presidential Records Act of 1978, many of President George H.W. Bush's papers are due to become public in January.
The 1984 law establishing the National Archives and Records Administration provides that the archivist will serve an indefinite term and can be replaced if he resigns or is removed by the president. If he is removed, "the president shall communicate the reasons for any such removal" to Congress, the law says.

Well looks like Sandy will have a roommate in his prison cell

I was CERTAIN Berger had inside help. This makes sense that the chief guy was telling underlings to ignore the law and let Berger remove stuff. I bet Carlin is the one who called Lindsey. And I bet the reason we know about the phone call to Lindsey has something to do with those "unauthorized agencies" hearing the call.
It is so funny you said that about going away and something happening. I just heard on local radio this morning that Dick Cheney is coming to Tucson this Saturday! Time and location to be announced. We are going up north Friday night for the weekend so won't be in town for this.
As much as we're all looking forward to our little getaway, I am very disappointed that I won't be able to go see the VP.
Bush, Ford Libraries Get New Directors
Archivist of the United States John W. Carlin has selected new directors for the Gerald R. Ford Library in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas. The announcements were made November 30 and December 1 respectively.
Uh, Carlin gets to pick the directors for other presidential libraries?! Am I aline in thinking, in light of recent events, this is not a good idea....
for later
David E. Alsobrook to direct Clinton Presidential Materials Project
Archivist of the United States John W. Carlin appointed David E. Alsobrook as Director of the Clinton Presidential Materials Project. Alsobrook will leave his position as Director of the George Bush Library to take on this new challenge. As Director of the Bush Presidential Materials Project, Alsobrook previously directed the transition of Bush Presidential materials from the White House to the George Bush Library. He was selected as Director of the George Bush Library in 1997. In addition to his work with the Bush materials and library, Alsobrook was liaison for NARA at the Carter White House and then spent ten years as the supervisory archivist at the Jimmy Carter Library in Atlanta, Georgia. Alsobrook will direct the Project in Little Rock, Arkansas, at a temporary facility where all records and the head-of-state and domestic gifts of the Clinton presidency will be stored pending construction of the Clinton Library. The Clinton historical materials include more than 75 million pages of official and personal papers, 1,850,000 photographs, and 75,000 presidential gifts.
I wouldn't want any of these people near anything of historical value. Ever.
Why is this guy whining to Carl Levin?
It is clearly not in the Senator's best interest to take up the cause of a lowly ex-political appointee when we have so much more pressing business in Congress.
Is this not a violation of our form of open government?
Why hasn't this been challenged?
Not only were historians upset over the order, but similar concerns were voiced by an aide to former President Bill Clinton who reportedly opposed the language of the order. A letter written to the Bush White House by Bruce Lindsey, Clinton's deputy White House counsel and now a lawyer for the William J. Clinton Foundation, stated, "a government's legitimacy is based on trust of its people...when decisions are made on behalf of the American people, citizens eventually have to be able to see the process of how those decisions came to be."
Gee, now why do you suppose the Clintonoids would object to this EO?
I'd say Clinton started working on sweeping up his papers for legacy refurbishing the minute he left office.
I'll bet Berger wasn't the only one.
I'll bet some papers have been removed and replaced.
They were convinced Gore was going to win, and when he didn't, this was their back-up plan.
Bet impeachment evidence is gone....
Darn good question. And I'm starting to worry about those other libraries, and not just the National Archives.
/sarcasm
I'll bet no-one knows the extent of what they've done, where they've done it, and when.
Maybe,.....'George T' knows?
I'm missing the George T connection.
Is this speculation or is there something there?
c) Denials and appeals. Denials under FOIA of access to national security information accessioned into the National Archives of the United States are made by designated officials of the originating or responsible agency or by NARA under a written delegationof authority. You must appeal determinations that records remain classified for reasons of national security to the agency with responsibility for protecting and declassifying that information. NARA will provide you with the necessary appeal information in those cases.Dated: August 17, 2000.John W. Carlin,Archivist of the United States.
Carlin could refuse FOIA requests? Gee, if so, couldn't that come in handy?
