Details now emerging. In Japanese.....
North Korean MiG locked on to Japan EP-3 surveillance craft over Sea of Japan in March 2003, during joint work over international waters between Japan and North Korea, with US Navy. US Navy RC135-S "Cobra Ball" surveillance aircraft was also locked on for shootdown by DPRK Airforce in international airspace.
Japan Air Self Defense forces scrambled (several) F-15s from Komaki Air Base in Western Japan to challenge the DPRK MiGs, which backed down and released their radar "Lock On".
Later and soon after, the DPRK enemy aircraft harrassed US Navy Aircraft for nearly 20 minutes, flying within 60 feet, attempting an altercation apparantly a-la "Pilot Hero" and 'hotdog' Wong Wei of the Chinese People's Air Force. It was reasoned (by the Japanese press in the article) that the DPRK initially thought the Japanese aircraft was US...(map of DPRK Air Bases above)..story developing on Sunday.........

We need to shoot a few of these jokers down the next time they do this. When the UN complains, tell them to go to hell.
Are you kidding, it was probably First Flight Leader Kim himself hot dogging around. You know how he can do everything so well.
Juche THIS, you lil rat.
ZakZak is mistaken. The Air Force operates RC-135s. The Navy operates E-6 TACAMOs.
According to KCNA news agency in Pyongyang, He is known to visit countless villages, and merely with the extension of His hand, bring needed rain or abundant crops. It is said the sun rose at midnight the day He was born in the log cabin near Mt. Paektu! I am sure it was Fat Kim, the Short Donged Chia Pet, Himself!
The article said (in retrospect) "beigun", which means US military, not necessarily Navy craft or AF craft specifically.
These were operating day and night out of Kadena AB, up and down the corridor in the Sea of Japan between Japan and the People's Paradise.
I'm sure we can arrange this phenomenon to actually take place the day he kicks the bucket !!!!
Didn't Wong Wei crash land on Gilligan's Island?
Great post, thanks.
I picked up this news in Korean. Nice that AIT translated it and put it up here.
That particular mission is flown by Navy EP-3E's not the E-6. The same type which ended up on the deck in China a couple of years ago.
In 1969, the EP-3's predecessor, an EC-121 Super Constellation was shot down by North Korea Migs as it operated in international airspace killing all 31 crewmembers.
Thanks, for the report. :))
The surprise is that the North Koreans bothered with a visual ID. No doubt that they wanted to concern us with an "incident" just before or during our invasion of Iraq in March of 2003...must have pissed them to have it turn out to be a Japanese recon plane instead of one of ours. 5 Legislative Days Left Until The AWB Expires
I doubt North Korea can afford both guns and kimchee.
