California Freepers: Help Collect Books for Troops
n/a | 7-25-04 | self

Posted on 07/25/2004 10:36:59 AM PDT by calif_reaganite

The California RNC Delegation has organized a paperback book drive to collect books and donate them to the members of our Armed Forces serving our country abroad.

I will be donating a box full of paperbacks on a variety of subjects from history to sci-fi and I hope you can join me in expressing our appreciation of the fact that these brave men and women are placing themselves in harm's way abroad so that freedom can reign supreme at home. If you have any paperbacks that you are willing to donate to the troops, please either get in touch with me by freepmail. Books can also be dropped off at the RNC California delegation offices at 921 11th Street, Suite 110 in downtown Sacramento or at the CRP Convention at the Manchester Hyatt Hotel in San Diego Aug 6-8

Through RNC's Operation Paperback, these books will reach our troops in places such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Korea, Italy, Iceland, England, Macedonia, Bahrain, Hungary, Japan and Turkey.

Your help would be most appreciated.

While the rats in Boston are spewing their gloom and doom, the CA Republican delegation is focusing on supporting our troops abroad.

What phone number do you call and/or where do you take them?

I have a lot of good paperback books, which I read, but are not likely to read again and would be very interested in donating.

Warning here: we did this last month and received a 80% romance novels, and about 10% childrens books. Now I know there are women in service now, but really.... So tell people what kind of books you are looking for.

If you are in the Sacramento area, you can drop them off at the CA Delegation offices at 921 11th Street, Suite 110. You can also mail them there. Or, I might be able to come pick them up - that can be worked out over freepmail. Thanks

I'm sure the troops will appreciate any kind of attention, but here's what would be optimal: science-fiction, fantasy, mystery, true crime, horror, general fiction, military history (especially about the British colonial Middle East), Middle-Eastern History/Culture especially books about the Babylonian/Tigris Valley and history of Islam and Arabia, also anything about the Kurds. In addition, thrillers and action/adventure stories by authors such as Tom Clancy and W.E.B. Griffin are always well received.

Thanks

Well, in addition to general interest, I bet they'll appreciate anything that makes the local "populace" easier to understand.

My guess is that women do most of the leisure time reading in this country. Which explains the books you received.

This is a great idea. Easy to do, and actually accomplishes something.

Let me look through my stuff.

I have a box of biographies, history, mysteries and non-fiction ... maybe even two or three bixes. Anywhere in L.A. to drop off?

I am in the LA area. Could you check, in case there is a local pick up here?

I have about 10 I can send.

MapQuest says the zip for the Sacramento address is 95814-2845.

I will ship media rate, so you should get them in about a week to 10 days from Nevada, "if the wind don't blow and the mules don't bite".

How long do we have to get them to Sacramento?

Please give complete address, including zip code. At current cost of gas, mailing or UPS is the most efficient. I can send a BOX of perbacks. NO romance stuff, either.

The plan is to send them off from the National Convention on August 31. So in the next 2 weeks or so, books can be sent to Sacramento - the address is

California RNC Delegation
c/o Igor Birman
921 11th Street, Suite 110
Sacramento, CA 95814.

After August 10, they should be sent directly to New York, to

California RNC Delegation
Marriott Marquis Hotel, Times Square
1535 Broadway
New York, NY 10036.

Also, if you are in California, I might be able to arrange for a pickup, if it is too much trouble to mail them off.

Thanks!

I live in the SF east bay, and have quite a few paperbacks I can get rid of. And they aren't romance novels. Some scifi, murder mystery, stuff by Dale Brown, Tom Clancy. I can toss them in a box and mail them. I was just going to give them to goodwill, or some other place like that.

That would be great, if you could do that. Just let me know if/when you get them mailed. Thanks!
