McCullough: "PROTECT MARRIAGE" SUNDAY IS HERE!! (NYC FREEPER ALERT)

EDITORIAL - For the last 120 days we have talked about the need to send a message of support for the institution of marriage as it has been defined from the beginning of civilization. The day has arrived and the time to act is here.

Today at City Hall Park in downtown NYC. You are invited to come and renew your marriage vows. Marriage by definition is a sacred covenant between one man and one woman. This ceremony today is extremely significant to this regard.

Significant in size and scope. Today unified African American churches from the COGIC denomination (Church of God In Christ) in NYC will work together with suburban white churches in ways never before seen. COGIC has roughly 5000 churches in the Tri-State area. CONLICO which is the largest association of hispanic churches in the NYC Metro area and consists of roughly 7000 churches in the Tri-State area is also participating. And the City Covenant Coalition, which brought together 400 pastors on the steps of City Hall back in the spring will again be the organizing agency to accomplish today's task will also play a major role in the day.

In the past several weeks we have talked with Pastors Joe Mattera, of CCC, Bishop Hector Banano of CONLICO, and Dr. Jerry West of COGIC on the show. In addition to that better than a dozen more pastors have made appearances in support of the event today.

We have made personal pleas and asked pastors to do the same in their pulpits...

So today the day arrives...be at City Hall by no later than 3pm - you will want to get a good spot. Remember there are no placards denouncing anything. This is a pro-actively positive statement by the unfied church community in the New York area to say "we value marriage as an institution and we wish to see it protected from being redefined so as to become meaningless."

At 4pm the ceremony will begin. Prayers will be offered and the church community will repent and ask forgiveness for the disrespect that the heterosexual church has treated marriage with in recent days. There will be prayers asking God Almighty to strengthen the institution of marriage in the city of New York, and even more largely in the Tri-State area, and finally there will be prayers offered to assist President Bush in the passing of the constitutional amendment to protect marriage.

This massive support of this measure is not intended to send a message of rejection or disapproval to anyone. Simply to reinforce the value of biblically defined marriage for what it is.

My sociology and anthropology professors emphasized the importance of a stable family for society as well as individuals. Research supports this.

I find it difficult to understand why such intense feelings are ignited by this subject. It is beginning to smack of paranoia.
WHY is marriage "under attack"? What is everybody so frightened about? I can only presume it's the "same sex" marriage business which has set alarm bells ringing and inflated the issue out of all proportion.
I imagine very few people would deny for a moment that the family is a major anchor for society, but it doesn't preclude other relationships or prevent couples of different sexes cohabiting. (Economically, too, if every single person were to marry, there'd be an overall drop in the tax take, surely?)
The trumpeting about the institute of marriage being perfect - or that's the message - is dubious. It is riddled with faults which we all accept. What is the divorce rate in the US today? How many wives have to seek refuge after being battered by their "loving" husbands? Nor do children escape maltreatment by bad parents or even sexual interference - from both parents and relatives.
We have to bear in mind that some individuals are just not psychologically suited to marriage for any one of a hundred different reasons. Let's keep a sense of proportion - unless you really want to impose uniformity in which case you might as well do away with the concept of democracy.
