Brazilian woman hands in 1,300 guns Sat 24 July, 2004 08:04
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - A Brazilian woman has surrendered an arsenal of about 1,300 firearms under the country's guns-for-money disarmament program that started last week.
A federal police spokeswoman in the city of Sao Paulo said the woman, who will receive $65,600 (35,800 pounds) for the weaponry that ranged from muskets to mortar shells, told police she was the daughter of a late guns collector.
Police transported the guns from her house under heavy escort on Friday and would not reveal her identity.
Police across Brazil have received 5,362 weapons since the July 15 start of the government-sponsored campaign to cut firearm ownership in a country with one of the world's highest murder rates.
For every gun that is handed in, be it licensed or illegal, owners get up to $100 and no questions are asked.
Federal police initially hoped to withdraw 80,000 guns by the end of the program in December but they now expect higher numbers after the first week.
In crime-ridden Rio de Janeiro, state authorities are offering as much as $330 for machine-guns and other heavy armaments, as well as extra payment to police who confiscate weapons from criminals.

The Europeans have kept their jackboots on those people so long that they have been pacified. The Indians of that country are already losing their homes and land to developers and the government. You are right. This will only accelerate their extermination of the "undesirables".
Sounds like an open invitation for abuse.
I will NOT turn in my weapons. I will NOT surrender them. I WILL die with one of them in my hands first.
$65,000. Make you wonder what she could have got at a gun collector's auction in the U.S. The collection may have been much more valuable than that.
Well, maybe not today, and maybe not ten years from now, but it is my firm belief, backed up by the sad lessons of human history, that in time ALL governments become predatory. When that happens, the people must be properly equipped, even if it means only to die on your feet rather than on your knees.
The only person I'll turn my guns in to is Jesus Christ. Until his return I'm hanging on to them.Molon Labe, f***ers!
I have been to Sao Paulo and Salvador Brazil. Sao Paulo is a HUGE city and has the worst smog I have ever seen - and I am from Los Angeles!
I just wonder where they got the idea, what the principle is behind it, where they got the money to carry it out. Could it be public money, so the public is turning in something of value (perhaps) in return for their own money. This might just be the same double scam that the tax system anywhere might be called since money is not taxed just once, but multiple times. So joe public takes it in the ear because he is so stupid. Ah well, let the buyer beware.
And the crime there.... one of the biggest crimes.... you are driving along, criminals put trees across the road. You stop your car. They jump in, they make you drive to an ATM, they beat you and leave you for dead. The lucky ones live through this. When I was visiting there, I stayed with my host and hostess at all times, since they knew the area. But we were still in danger. The company my husband works for ask my husband if we wanted to move there for a year or so. He turned it down. Ever see PROOF OF LIFE... that is life in a lot of SA.
Tax rate is REALLY high in Brazil, especially for anything you bring there from another country. Something like 78% on foreign cars. The gov. has money, they just never use it to bring plumbing and elec. to the poor people who live in the shacks all over the place. They do like to build expensive memorial statues. Maybe they plan to melt the old guns down for more memorials.
one of the few media reports that calls an "arsenal" correctly.
most "arsenals" are people with more than one gun.
I hope she was smart enough to keep the very best ones, and to use the money for waterproof containers to bury the ones she kept.
Effect on crime: none.
When it is a crime to owm ANY gun, may as well own a machine gun as a musket.
"The only person I'll turn my guns in to is Jesus Christ. Until his return I'm hanging on to them.Molon Labe, f***ers!"
Great one. I just made that my inspirational quote of the day.
my thought exactly...
No,no,no,no............Sounds to me like she has some Antiques..........which will now be melted down............bye bye history.........Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
