Denzel Washington Re:Moore 9-11,"I'm an Ex-slave"
Katie Couric interview Friday night tv | 7/23/04 | sunnsydie

Posted on 07/23/2004 5:53:33 PM PDT by SunnySide

Katie Couric asked Denzel Washington if he likes to keep his politics private, He said he's not one of those people. He does speak his mind.

Couric asked Denzel, Did you see Moores movie 9-11?

Denzel, "I didn't see it, I live in America, I grew up here, I'm an ex-slave"

Whaaaaa?! Really?! Denzel, do you even know what a slave is? Have you ever worked on a plantation, prepared meals for an entire household? Driven Miss Daisy? Ugh another dillentante entertainer posturing as a martyr to the masses who puts his silver foot in his obnoxioulsy opinionated mouth. He wouldn't even allow Meryl Streep to get her opinion in edge wise.

Mr.Denzel, YOU are nothing but an obnoxiously opinionated MALE CHAUVINISTIC PIG. How many women have you punked on the sly behind your wifes back? About the closet you probably ever came to being a slave was being asked to take out the kitchen trash by your own mother and I'm certain you did that with bitter contempt too. Lose the huge chip on your shoulder Denzel. Nobody likes a wealthy pouter. And YOU are a Hollywood person wether YOU like it or not. Yes YOU too are subject to labels. Slave my hiney. Indeed, your remark is a disgrace to every slave in the history of the world. Slaves still exist today in Africa held captive by other Africans. Get over yourself Denzel.

I really don't think he meant this the way people are interpreting it. Denzel Washington didn't go to see Moore's piece of garbage, and he also makes movies that are quite conservative in tone (and very good, on top of it).

I think we should wait until we get the whole interview.

Hey Denzel, since you are an ex-slave how many years did you pick cotton? I presume they are still stringing brothers up on Mr. Gilmore's property. Wake Up Brother, this is the 21st century. Quit playing the race and victim card and be a man. Yea, get on the good foot!!! Bush/Cheney 2004

According to his logic, I’m a former slave owner.

And according to that logic, I'm a U. S. Army Cav. Sgt., Like my Great Grandfather, Martin V.B. Loucks (Battle of Chicamauga)(Hope I got that spelling right.)

I saw this interview. I came away from it with disgust at another Hollywood movie geared against President Bush and the War. THAT was the topic.

I think we can get carried away with parsing out every little tidbit someone says, and make it a 425 post thread, when most haven't seen it.

I am sure Mr. Washington did not mean he was a literal slave, but because he is older, and lived a long time being from the black community, he has seen things that most of us haven't.

I was more appalled..or I guess appalled is not the correct word...I was more disgusted, that the left is doing major propaganda against the President, and mainly against the war, with this movie, and that is why the question was brought up about Moore's movie. Katie Couric is no longer the "perky" one. She is crude, and trying desperately to be a hard hitting journalist. She was confrontational...with who?....Denzel !! That is why he lashed out at her, and she quickly shot back a quick, cutting response, but with a Katie smile on her lips.

The thing to think about is THEY MEAN BUSINESS !! They will do anything to get the Bush Administration OUT. And in the meantime.....the Republicans are S-I-L-E-N-T.

Remember...1/2 of the U.S. population votes. Of that 1/2 , we are neck and neck in the poles. Of the 1/2 that pay attention to this like WE DO...is a very small number. So blockbuster movies and Hollywood stars on t.v. speak to the Jay Leno crowd that ONLY GET THEIR NEWS from that source. They are not reading FR, or listening to conservative talk radio...and for me, I sure wish the Bully Pulpit was used more, and the Republicans knew how to fight for this important cause.

THIS is what I took from the interview...not Denzil's saying he was a slave.

Over-reaction is a standard trait of some on this forum.

The only thing that separates them from the loony left is that they are loony right.

I don't see where his saying that he's an ex-slave gives any insight to his political leanings. Denzel Washington is a terrifically talented actor, handsome as all get out, and apparently a good father and husband. At least he isn't going around the country yelling and spewing his beliefs and had to be pushed by Khatey Al-Khourek into saying even this much.

I can understand people not wanting reparations for slavery, but I can't fathom why they want to change history and ignore the fact that slavery DID exist in these United States. It does happen to be a huge negative blot on our freedom timeline. If you pretend it didn't happen, you can't very well deal with its societal consequences today.

And I'm a poor, illiterate dirt farmer who didn't own anything but a mule. Or else I'm an indentured servant, or a transported convict, or a serf, or a Druid human sacrifice.

BTW, it's Chickamauga.

I agree - when I read Denzel's statement, I thought it was a dig at Micheal Moore. Here on this forum, we frequently use "off the plantation" to describe blacks who are no longer democrats - no longer "slaves" to the party.

While it's highly unlikely Denzel's using the phrase "I'm an ex-slave" in the same way, I find it very hard to get upset at his phraseology when 1) we use it and 2) he's using it against Micheal Moore...

"... Perhaps he meant that he was freed from the liberal left wing welfare plantation. And he is no longer a slave of those ideas anymore ? Just a thought."

That's how I read it too.

I didn't see the interview, so I probably shouldn't make any comments here. However, what I have read about this latest (Bush bashing) film from other sources makes me suspect that his comment was meant to deflect Katie Couric and prevent himself from being dragged into Bush bashing.

I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem to me that he would leap on that particular bandwagon, although most of Hollywood (and the NY television studios) would like him to do so.

Maybe I can still legally whip his ass.

Not sure why, but this really struck my funnybone. Best laugh I've had in awhile. Thanks!

The first black people on these shores arrived as slaves, in Virginia, within a decade or so of the Jamestown settlement. I haven't heard of any blacks arriving here from Africa as free men, pre-Civil War, so unless his grandparents came through Ellis Island or something, he is the descendant of slaves.

The vast majority of blacks are descendants of slaves, and Mr. Washington is probably among them, but there were free black men who colonized America, albeit not many. There were also black slaveholders who were quite wealthy and who owned more slaves than many of the white slaveholders. The following is a source for this interesting piece of American history.

Nobody here knows what he meant by his "ex-slave" comment.

I'd have to agree. Can we get some context?

"I didn't see it, I live in America, I grew up here, I'm an ex-slave" is a cryptic answer to, "Did you see Moores movie 9-11?". Except for the, "I didnt see it..." part.

Did he expand on that?

I agree with your take on it. And if he kept talking over the others, it sounds like he didn't want them to get off into Bush-bashing either.

...but there were free black men who colonized America...

You mean there were some black people in colonial days who who voluntarily got on the boat in Africa, arrived in America as free men, and who remained free, and whose descendants remained free straight through to the end of the Civil War? Or do you mean there were some early slaves or children of the first groups of slaves who gained freedom very early on during Colonial days?

I thought John Q was quite a liberal movie. Sounds like Manchurian Candidate may be similar.

I don't understand the quote out of context, but it doesn't sound that bad to me.
