Denzel Washington Re:Moore 9-11,"I'm an Ex-slave"
Katie Couric interview Friday night tv | 7/23/04 | sunnsydie

Posted on 07/23/2004 5:53:33 PM PDT by SunnySide

Katie Couric asked Denzel Washington if he likes to keep his politics private, He said he's not one of those people. He does speak his mind.

Couric asked Denzel, Did you see Moores movie 9-11?

Denzel, "I didn't see it, I live in America, I grew up here, I'm an ex-slave"

Whaaaaa?! Really?! Denzel, do you even know what a slave is? Have you ever worked on a plantation, prepared meals for an entire household? Driven Miss Daisy? Ugh another dillentante entertainer posturing as a martyr to the masses who puts his silver foot in his obnoxioulsy opinionated mouth. He wouldn't even allow Meryl Streep to get her opinion in edge wise.

Mr.Denzel, YOU are nothing but an obnoxiously opinionated MALE CHAUVINISTIC PIG. How many women have you punked on the sly behind your wifes back? About the closet you probably ever came to being a slave was being asked to take out the kitchen trash by your own mother and I'm certain you did that with bitter contempt too. Lose the huge chip on your shoulder Denzel. Nobody likes a wealthy pouter. And YOU are a Hollywood person wether YOU like it or not. Yes YOU too are subject to labels. Slave my hiney. Indeed, your remark is a disgrace to every slave in the history of the world. Slaves still exist today in Africa held captive by other Africans. Get over yourself Denzel.

"Nothing DW said in this short excerpt gives this conservative any problems at all. To tell the truth, it sounds like piling on the black guy for no particular reason."

To tell the truth by your reasoning all of Free Republics topics and posts could be considered piling on one person or another as does the DNC websites with such voracity. You are allowed your opinion on this matter as I am. Good day. (grin)

Denzel "piled" his loud words over Courics and Streeps with the intent to drown them out. Read it and weep.

NO, Denzel kept talking over Streep and Couric everytime he didn't want to "hear" their words. That's disrespect and worse it's male chauvinistic disrespect TALKING LOUDLY OVER ANOTHERS attempt to respond. It's rude to cut some one off when they've allowed you to have your say in matter.

Way to go my man Denzel! At least he didn't give her the sock in the jaw I wanted to after she said Karen Hughes and Peggy Noonan were her inspiration for her Manchurian Candidate character.

If he was rude, so be it. I didn't see the interview. But in the limited context of what was printed, I just didn't see what was so offensive as to cause such a visceral reaction among posters (not just you). Nothing personal, and you are certainly entitled to your point of view upon viewing the interview. The quotes just didn't seem like all that big of a deal, and I was puzzled by the reactions.

Hope you have a good day.

Next you'll be demanding I give Denzel ex-slave reparations to compliment his Oscar. (rolls eyes)

No, and just because I disagree with your interpretation of something is no reason to start pigeonholing me into some extreme liberal position.

I assume you posted the vanity to get comments. I posted how I interpreted what was said, which differs from what you understood. It does not remotely resemble a call for reparations. I simply said there are other ways to interpret what was said that, in context, make more sense.

If you don't like DW because he is rude, lewd, tacky, arrogant, whatever, just post that. But this quote doesn't validate (IMO) that position, nor justify the reaction that I am seeing.

I'd rather hear DW call himself an ex-slave than to hear Danny Glover or Prince call themselves current ones. Can we agree on that?

Now you're telling me what I should and should not post. Not very tolerant are you. And FYI I already posted that I don't like DW's "rudeness". I have nothing against him personally. For your pleasure here is the 3rd time I will post what you say I did not post. Good day (grin)

"And I choose to help myself help others rid this country of commie Pinko dilletante entertainers posing as elected clergy and politicians ie., false witnesses."

Great. I just don't think Denzel is one of them. He said he doesn't get into politics much. I think he is a conservative who keeps his politics to himself in leftist pinko entertainer circles. Your original post seemed to put him into that catergory.

(sigh)

Yes, it is clear that you thought he was rude. That is why I used the phrase "just post that," so you wouldn't feel compelled to twist a quote from DW into something I don't think he said in order to validate your opinion. Kind of like you are doing to me.

And since you hae backed off that whole ex-slave thing, I take it that you agree that the "ex-slave" comment that you started with was perhaps not as big of a deal as you originally implied? You are chopping up my posts to leave out the main points pretty well, so I assume the parts you leave out you agree with.

"Your apparent obsession with a black actor referring to himself as an "ex-slave" is a completely different issue. "

First you tell me what I shouldn't or should post, now you're implying I am obsessed. Wow, taking this a tad personal aren't you? Careful, cause you are the one now projecting obsessions.

Denzel? Denzel Washington is that you?

Denzel might be shocked to discover that an awful lot of French people were brought into Orleans around 1600, as "slave" labor. They were in debt prisons, without any hope of a life. Serving as slave labor was their one escape in life. If one looks at the entire history of labor in America between 1492 and 1865...they might be shocked at what really happened.

>Working on a plantation (or farm) does not equal slavery. Preparing meals for an entire household is not slavery, and being a driver for someone does not mean slavery. I can think of people I know today who do each of those things, who are happy people who are not slaves at all. Think about it.

It is also fun
to consider sports figures.
Many make millions,

they'd never be called
"slaves," but look at their whole life:
they're bought and traded,

and since they grow up
from grade school on a "sports track"
they never acquire

basic social skills
or a real education.
By any metric

other than money,
many famous black people
are worse off than slaves.

Folks, I saw the interview last night and I suspect Denzel is one of the good guys. (Years ago, the New York Times wrote that Denzel Washington was "rumored to be a conservative".) I think the ex-slave remark didn;t make sense, but I think he was trying to say to Michael Moore that he (Denzel) didn't need MM to tell him about America. Then DW had the guts to challenege Meryl Streep's dopily literal interpretation of the Gospel. THEN, DW asked what is being done for the soldiers coming home from Iraq. You don;t hear any of his Hollywood cronies asking that. And I almost forgot: DW was borderline rude to Katie Couric, which makes him a star in my book. Don;t write off DW, freepers!

I agree with you and several other posters on this point.

Admittedly, I did not see the interview, so it is hard to make an accurate judgement on those lines alone.

However....since it is all I have to go on, here goes. What is the one line we use when talking about Jesse Jackson, et al? The race whores want to keep the blacks "on the plantation." Only this time the usual suspects (Jesse, Al, the Dems) are the masters now. Which is why conservative blacks are poison to them.

Because it was in the context of being asked if he saw F9/11 and the herd mentality among Hollywood, I interpreted "ex-slave" in terms of race whoring.

I do not know what Denzel's politics are. He has always been gracious and polite in the interviews I have seen. I have never heard him pull out a race card. The comments I have heard him make have never, ever been with a tone of "you owe us, we were slaves."

What? Booker T. Washington was reincarnated as Denzel Washington? Wages too low at the studio?

Denzel was NOT an EX-slave.

Would Denzel be happier if his ancestors were left behind in Africa?

Nothing left but a few lion farts! Or maybe a hippo burp!
