Today President Bush spoke to the National Urban League Conference in Detroit Michigan. He detailed his administrations progress since becoming the President and asked for their vote. President Bush ask the group if the Democrats took the African American vote for granted and ask them to compare his record since becoming president to what the Democrats have done for them. The speech was well recieved and IMHO it was a homerun

I am doing fine. Just turned 78. Fully recovered, jogging every after noon. I got best medical care and finished paying the bill last week. I have four recent books on stroke prevention and following instructions.
I received Hewitt's book "If it's not close, they can't cheat" today, and just started reading. I think it a very good book. Maybe I'll order copies sent to my children.
I noted in your post the other night that you are in Michigan. I was born in SE MI.

Republican or Democrat...you COULDN'T disagree with what he brought up. It just made good sense.
AND...he asked questions of his audience. If there's one thing I've been begging every higher up I can talk to or write to is ENGAGE YOUR AUDIENCE. It works.

I thought I would hate it, but after witnessing the people there who really cared about those who couldn't fend for themselves, I grew to really respect those who take time out of their day to help those in need. The black man who ran the soup kitchen was probably one of the finest human beings I have ever known. His name was Lucky and he did so much more than just serve food to the needy, I saw first hand the love this man had for those in need and those who wanted to help themselves.
I met him in 1978, and after I finished the 300 hours I was ordered to serve, I continued to offer my time helping with his soup kitchen for years after that, he died 3 years ago and I attended his funeral. I will take 1 Lucky over 10,000 Jesse Jackson's or Al Sharpton's. Lucky died with little more than the shirt on his back, but he was the richest man I have ever known
I must confess, this man was doing SUCH a GREAT JOB, that I wished I could be up there on the stage...like the sign language translator making applause gestures and saying, "Come on now...give it up for the Pres!"
Some in the audience were just plain kinda stiff, but his words will DEFINITELY get the thinking person to take some notice...plant the seed. Many were clapping. How could they HELP themselves...He was excellent...He made good sense.

I caught a very brief bit of Michael Savage on my way home from work tonight. He was beside himself because President Bush shook the hands of Jackson and Sharpton. So naturally Savage flipped yet again and is now against GWB. (If Savage doesn't flip at least once an hour, it's a slow day.) Gawd I can't stand Savage. What on earth do people see in his show?!

RH...that comment says more about Sharpton's view, than about W's speech. AND...it says much between the lines. He is saying the message was good...just not who was saying. Stick with the first part of what he said...not the last. I think his response is very telling...and not entirely the reaction I would think Kerry types would want said.

Vice President Cheney was in Casper, Saturday, Did you get to the rally in Marquett? I also like the Upper Peninsula. When the kids were little we lived in St. Ignace. Worked on the bridge for three years, then we went to Sault St. Marie and replaced that old bridge with a new one. Then we took a vacation all across the peninsula through Marquette and beyond.

"Is the Democratic Party taking your vote for granted" is a mantra that needs to be repeated continually till November IMO.

I do know what you mean about Bush's SS guys looking ... well, almost worried when they've got to protect him in those big crowds. They are as serious as a heart attack about keeping him alive and unhurt. I think any sitting president gets a truckload of death threats, while a contender probably gets a lot fewer. Track record-wise, I don't recall any contender whose life was attempted during a campaign, but there certainly have been too many attempts, and successful efforts, on the lives of sitting presidents. God bless all candidates to be safe.
I couldn't watch the speech. I tried, but all of those sour faces and crossed arms in the audience ticked me off.
I had to turn it off or throw something through the tv.

That speech should go far to plant the right seeds.

WASHINGTON, July 23 - Music, dating and life with Dad as president featured in the first online chat with the presidential daughters, Jenna and Barbara.
The 22-year-old twins , who recently graduated from college and announced that they would join their father's re-election campaign, made their dual campaign debuts on Tuesday, with Jenna sticking her tongue out as the presidential limo drove past news photographers in St. Louis.
Their online chat early Friday evening was peppered with exclamation points as they raved about world leaders like the former Czech president Vaclav Havel ("He loves the Rolling Stones!") and gave a dual portrait of Tony Blair of Britain and Vladimir Putin of Russia ("They both have a great sense of humor!").
More than 2,600 questions were submitted and 3,700 people waited online as the women spent one hour sending out replies to 14 questions from the Bush campaign headquarters in Arlington, Va., said Susan Whitson, a spokeswoman for the twins. While the questions and answers appeared in slow succession, as if typed live, Ms. Whitson said some of the responses had been prepared in advance.
Asked whether White House living stifles a young person, the twins said they were amused by "Chasing Liberty," a film about a president's daughter who has trouble dating because of overprotective Secret Service agents.
"We have led normal lives without constant supervision by chaperones and Secret Service although they do follow us from a distance," the twins wrote in the chat session.
While George Bush may be leader of the most powerful nation on earth, the twins said their father still had time for fun and jokes.
"He is definitely an extremely busy man, but he still finds plenty of time to devote to us," they wrote, describing a birthday party for them two months after the Sept. 11 attacks. "Although our dad had a lot on his mind, he still spent plenty of time with us and our friends."
Asked by Edith Fuog of Miami to describe their father in one sentence, the twins offered a paragraph that concluded by emphasizing the president's humorous side: "He always keeps us and our mom laughing."
References to life at home with the president were woven throughout the chat, often stretching to echo campaign slogans.
Mr. Bush has always kept promises, his daughters wrote.
"If Dad said he was going to come to one of our soccer games, he would be there," they wrote. "Even his critics can't argue that he is a steadfast leader who means what he says and acts with resolve."
