I know it is late afternoon on Friday for me to get a good response to this posting, however, I am constantly thinking that the US government should come clean, and admit that they lied to us about the shoulder to air missile that hit the TWA flight 800 in the NYC harbor.
I do appreciate that they lied to protect the flying public from panicking, however, after 9/11, and after the wall to wall public education regarding fanatic Islam, it would not be harmful to day to admit the truth.
Please let me know your views?
The first operational tests of the RIM-116 ( the Navy designation for the RAM Block 1) were conducted in January 1999 - over 2 and a half years after TWA-800 blew up. Next?
George Stephanopolous and John Kerry have publicly slipped and referred to Flt. 800 as the result of a terrorist act.
The only problem that I have with the 2nd hypothesis is that the US military is not like the Soviet Military. If there was even a missile system test in the area (Radar Test, no Launch), we'd have heard about it by now from a retired EM -- dontcha think? He'd write a book and it would be an instant best seller. Government wouldn't be able to touch him, since to do so would tend to validate the accusation.
However, I consider a RAM missile fired from a ship as not beyond the realm of possibility.
How reliable is that information?
The 9/11 commission has just detailed the confusion that went on for hours after the first plane crashed into New York. And yet you believe that such confusion was not possible in July 1996? After a single incident? With no evidence readily available to indicate what brough the plane down?

We can get hung up on details and specs and strategy all day that either supports or discredits one missile theory or another. All I know is that a lot of human beans saw something streak up toward the plane. It wasn't just one wino looking to get on TV. I don't know enough about planes to have an informed opinion on the fuel tank vapor theory, but I can't explain away all the eyewitnesses that think they saw a missile.
How many retired officers came out and publicly exposed the U.S. Navy when they tried to blame that explosion on the U.S.S. Iowa on a distraught homosexual sailor?
You can take this one to the bank . . . if the 9/11 attack had only involved a single hijacked aircraft instead of four, we'd all be sitting here having the same discussion about how preposterous it is for the NTSB and FBI to call the crash of an airliner into the World Trade Center an "accident."

Irrefutable evidence points to a missile takedown.
The only question is, was it:
a) Intentional, in which case it was Iraq, Iran or Al Qaeda;
b) An accident, most likely the U.S. Navy in training exercises.
Either would have severely impacted Clinton's re-election prospects and the Olympics in Atlanta shortly thereafter would have been a political fiasco.
Talk about motive for a cover-up!

I don't know if the source you linked there refutes the idea of an RAM in the 1996 crash of Flight 800. It sounds to me that the RIM-116 upgrade described in that source is actually a modification of an existing anti-aircraft missile so that it can be used against cruise missiles.
The German-U.S. angle is quite intriguing to me. One explanation I've heard about the need for a cover-up is that the incident involved an accidental shoot-down by a naval vessel from another NATO country.
Radio traffic can be simulated, so I think it's unlikely that a Navy SAM system would get a full-up, firing test near a major international airport -- unless the launch was accidental and not part of the excercise (ie. "The Bedford Incident"). As I say, Unlikely but not Impossible.
And if the U.S. Navy can't even identify a terrorist shoot-down of a passenger jet in the middle of a freakin' training exercise, then we ought to turn the Pentagon into Disney World and put this country out of business.

Let me turn that around on you. How long did it take for Richard Clark to write his best-seller fantasy story? Or Joe Wilson? Time-scales are much more compressed than they were in 1964, and there is a proven market for Tell-All Books.
I won't burden you with my theory of the second Gulf of Tonkin incident. As for Iowa: That was an investigation leak. All the real witnesses were dead.

No, if you had read the site you would have known that the Rim-116 Block 0 was first produced in 1989. That had problems right off the bat, and it was the RIM-116 Block 1 which was the first to under go evals and the first to be accepted into service in January 1999.
My understanding is that it is (or was) fairly routine to conduct military exercises in the area around the crash site -- mainly because of the proximity to a remote Naval communications facility on eastern Long Island.

These aren't very good arguments for you to make in support of your point, because neither of these books was a "tell-all whistleblower" publication. They were both utter bullsh!t, just like the official NTSB/FBI explanation for the cause of the Flight 800 crash.
