U.S. yanked bribe plan to capture Bin Laden (hillary!, Albright might object)
New York Daily News ^ | 7/23/04 | James Gordon Meek

WASHINGTON - U.S. officials scrapped a 1999 plan to offer the Taliban a $250 million bribe to turn over Osama Bin Laden, fearing then-First Lady Hillary Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright would object to paying off the infamous women's rights abusers.

Clinton had long criticized the Islamic regime in Afghanistan for covering women with burkas and denying them educations and jobs.

According to the final 9/11 commission report, Bill Clinton's administration had already made fruitless overtures to the Taliban, paying $10 million to $20 million annually in bribes.

"Two senior State Department officials suggested asking the Saudis to offer the Taliban $250 million for Bin Laden," the report said, citing a May 1999 memo. But White House terrorism czar Richard Clarke "opposed ... a 'huge grant to a regime as heinous as the Taliban' and suggested that the idea might not seem attractive to either Secretary Albright or First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton - both critics of the Taliban's record on women's rights."

"Sen. Clinton was a vocal critic of the heinous Taliban regime well before 9/11," said her spokesman, Philippe Reines.

Which once again shows these people were never equipped with the character necessary to do the greatest good for the country.

I e-mailed the NY Daily News reporter for what page in the report it talks about the yearly contributions to the Taliban.

I would love to do a story for the newspaper on that. But, just turning down an offer to pay to get OBL is not really a story IMO.

We shouldn't be negotiating or bribing terrorists in order to try to get their leadership. Bush would have turned it down as well, though not for sexist reasons...because it would have just been wrong.

However, if the 9/11 report does indeed say that Clinton turned down the big bribe, yet donated smaller amounts yearly like the Daily News says, this is a story. It shows that the principles over the "anti-woman Taliban" only came into play in a huge donation. That is hypocrisy.

Bill Clinton according to the 09/11/01 commission report paid bribes annually to the sums of $10 million and $20 million dollars to the Talban. In retrospect at least some of this money was probably diverted by the Taliban for related(read Al Queda and other terrorists organizations) terrorists activities maybe even including the 09/11/01 attack.

As I type this, this prospect is indeed a dreadful thought.
I guess as time drags on, The whole truth will come out.

I'm still upset because none of the talk shows even brought this up.

The Clinton Administration was paying $10-20 million per year to the Taliban for nothing???

Not for nothing, for delaying 9-11 until the next President took office.

RE: $30M and the Taliban 13

Not for nothing, for delaying 9-11 until the next President took office.

The 'rats expected Gore would be wearing the mantle, and he would have paid the bribe. The 13 were working for UBL's interest, in attempt to continue the bribes (perhaps against blackmail) which were quite probably originally promised to continue.

In Neville Chamberlain-fashion, the 13 probably thought they were being patriotic, knowing that if the gravy train were abruptly halted, "they wouldn't like us any more, and we'd implicitly be inciting them to do something really bad--see, they were right! (/heavy sarcasm).

Considering their action to be patriotism (foundation belief of appeasers), they featured that President Bush might buy it.

Hugh? Either way, I agree. Paying the Taliban $250 million for Bin Laden would have been crazy at the time.

Opinion Journal's Best of the Web mentioned this story on Friday and at the bottom where they put contributors, my name is on the list. I wonder how many people sent them an e-mail about it?
