I saw it and agree. He looked as though he was on a death watch. He even sort of sounded sincere, when he said he was sorry.

Did any of the press accounts say exactly how many copies of the Richard Clarke draft of the 1999 Intelligence Report were taken?

From the new WAPost story:

A government official with knowledge of the probe said Berger removed from archives files all five or six drafts of a critique of the government's response to the millennium terrorism threat, which he said was classified "codeword," the government's highest level of document security.

The gist of the new article is that Berger is telling one story, and the Feds/archive people are telling another. For example, the feds/NARA inspector general are saying they contacted Lindsay after Berger's first visit on September 2, to notify him and Berger that there were docs missing -- docs that didn't include the millenium memo draft, and the docs were returned the next day. Berger denies they contacted him in September.

On October 2, the archives staff essentially set up a sting when Berger returned , putting special markings on documents they gave him to examine. When he left that day all copies of the millenium draft were missing.

I'm beginning to wonder if the millenium draft is a red herring -- maybe the papers Berger took on his first heist were the real target, and the October theft was meant to cover his tracks.

...see Berger on Fox giving that 30 sec statement? I did, and he looked absolutely terrified.

I did too and noticed the same thing. Usually he is so smooth and polished but this time he was hesitant, glancing all around, and gave the appearance of someone who had just seen a booger-bear. I wonder if someone had just explained to him that Felony means punishable by over a year in jail. It looked like dough-boy was going to wet himself.

I can't imagine how such information could elude a candidate for president when one of his advisors is under suspicion.

Especially when that advisor is, according to the New York Times of all outlets, apparently on Kerry's short list for consideration as Secretary of State. And this despite the "fact" that Berger is only an "informal advisor" and a bit player, if you actually believe the Rat spin.

The Rats are just killing themselves with their lame attempts to lie themselves out of this one. Their excuses are so incredibly stupid and ridiculous that all they're doing is pissing people off by insulting their intelligence.

It's actually quite amusing to watch. To paraphrase Aaron Brown when he was gloating over Limbaugh's drug bust, I just can't seem to wipe the smirk off my face.

The Washington Post is now front-paging this scandal.

Not quite. The story "By John F. Harris and Susan Schmidt Washington Post Staff Writers" and dated Thursday, July 22, 2004 is listed on the web site as being on Page A06.

Kerry told NBC News that he had been unaware Berger was under investigation.

Lawrence O'Donnell on Scarborough Country tonight said that Sandy Berger is the person who leaked the information about the investigation.

First, it isn't nice to a candidate/boss when someone doesn't tell them that they are under investigation. No "boss" likes surprises, and this sure turned out to be a corker.

Second, the media, the "presstitutes" that they are, are completely overlooking that Sandy Berger is the one who announced that he was under investigation, and has been since October.

So, WHO LEAKED THE INFO THAT BERGER WAS UNDER INVESTIGATION?

Answer: Sandy Berger

And to the other poster who asked "How do we keep this in the news?" -

I suggest we all continue to call and write the TV/cable stations and newspapers.

In one of the Berger threads I read last night, there was a long list of contacts. I wish I could re-list it here but I made my calls from the list and didn't keep a personal copy.

We ALL need to keep making those calls and writing those letters to the media, and let them know, "we are watching and we are paying attention to your coverage of this investigation."

WHAT TO WRITE:

--Let them know that you know that shoving classified notes into anything but a briefcase where it can be detected, is an obvious attempt on Berger's part to bypass security

-- and also that the National Archives has released the information that he took the same pages, MULTIPLE TIMES!!! So much so, they developed a coded system to monitor the pages that Berger kept requesting to read, and kept taking. Such behavior is not the "absent-mindness" that Slick Willy has offered up as an excuse, citing how messy Berger's office always was. This wasn't forgetfulness or sloppiness. This was intentional, repeated theft of Top Secret pages, and notes taken from them other pages as well.

If we keep calling and we keep saying this, over and over, the media will HAVE to cover more than the "timing of this leak is politically suspicious".....and include some genuine facts, for Pete's sake.

Makes those calls and write those letters!

Hello~make sure to read the WaPo article linked at #158. It talks about notes in the margins!:

Excerpt(Page 2 of the article at link):

The government source said the Archives employees were deferential toward Berger, given his prominence, but were worried when he returned to view more documents on Oct. 2. They devised a coding system and marked the documents they knew Berger was interested in canvassing, and watched him carefully. They knew he was interested in all the versions of the millennium review, some of which bore handwritten notes from Clinton-era officials who had reviewed them. At one point an Archives employee even handed Berger a coded draft and asked whether he was sure he had seen it.

It is mind-boggling to watch - but it is true - I really don't think this story will be allowed to get any legs - We won't hear about this after Sunday of this week - It won't make the nightly news again -

Sad, but true. The story is all about the evil Pubbies "leaking" this. They are evil personified.

According to a FoxNews article on their site, it was Berger's lawyer who told the media that he hid the docs in his clothing, including his socks.

Sounds to me like the man WANTED to get caught, probably for his own safety.

Hey is you were a big shot and caught in the act of stealing something I'd bet the first thing to come out of your mouth would me...."Let me talk to my lawyer." The fact that Linsay is no longer his representative says a lot to me. IMO the law enforcement was involved before....No mere clerk would have marked the papers etc without getting instructions from someone....Smell too much like legal authorities wanted to make sure their case was secure.....IMO They were already trying to figure out what he wanted, why and for whom.... Remember we're only reading the tip of the iceberg....The media does not know all......

Interesting take. It's plausible. I hope it's true, because then the big fish are finally going to get fileted, cornmealed and fried.

FoxNews reports also that Berger's attorney said he "knowingly" took the documents.

FYI,the FBI hasn't given in to Sandy's/Bruce Lindsay's games. And it's only now,NOW,that they are even trying to cop a plea deal of some sort. This is bigger than just Sandy Berger and ALL of the Clintonista/MSM spin machines put together, aren't going to do diddley-squat.

For Starters the FBI in many ways is quite inept -(Anthrax case ring a bell? - are they still harassing that ex-college professor??) -

Secondly - I hope this Berger case does get legs - But I doubt it will (never once did I say talking with A. Brown put me on the inside track - odd you would suggest it) -

Thirdly if you don't think the FBI can be influenced by media pressure - that is naive...period!! (regardless of who has been on this site longer) - Using that type of logic is pretty odd itself (I've been on this site longer...that means I am not naive ...kind of weird??)

Lastly....you watch...either Berger or Clinton's will be cited for this leak (lets bookmark this thread) - In fact Berger already is being cited with some sources (MSNBC)-

This story has just leaked and you are trying to suggest it is bigger then watergate - that is naive as well (not in terms of the offense being worse...it probably is - but in terms of how it will all play out - not going to be close to a watergate - you will be sadly mistaken)

I'd bet that his attorneys have them stashed in a very safe place in a very large bank to ensure that Berger lives through the investigation and any cooperating that he does.

Most astute. However, he knows it isn't that hard for the Clinton machine to get to those attorneys. It's only money and they've got lots more than he does.

There's a faintly poetic symmetry about that, don't you think?

And I think he wanted to get caught--if somebody forced me to hold up a bank, my only chance for safety would be to get myself arrested, right?

You would think the National Archives' employees would be just a little more cooperative. OK, Take TWO! Stuffs docs in his pants. Looks around, nobody there. Damn! Try again. etc.

He probably never considered just how distasteful the search might be to an average human being...

I know! I'll be they're hidden in Hillary's cod-piece! Nice respite from the DU bong-wah balls she's used to! ;-)

OK, I'll go hide now.

He also said that the Buck would stop at his desk.

What did Kerry do after Berger was exposed?.......

John Kerry said he had no clue that Berger was under investigation, meanwhile his team of Web Masters were busy spinning a web of "Now you see it, Now you don't" alterations to a website that only yesterday was singing the priases of Sandy Berger and even detailed a strategy to combat the weaknesses that were outlined in the missing Classified Documents that Sandy Berger is being accused of stealing and/or destroying......
