Just wanted to let everyone know that there will be a Vigil for Pittsburgh's Highland Drive VA Hospital (another VA Hospital set to close), tomorrow, 7/22/04, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the KDKA Garden's behind Gateway Center. I'm not too sure if Highland Drive will be able to be saved, but I am sure that the more people that we have there the stronger the message will get out to our elected officials that closing VA Hospitals is something that we will not tolerate. We have troops coming home everyday, and we need to make sure that every VA benefit is available to them!!!
I'm set to speak there too, but all I know right now is that I will probably be speaking sometime after 6:00 p.m. If you can make it, please try to attend because I think that it is really important to show that we care. If you wouldn't mind, please send this to your "ping" lists and the Burgh ping list too!!! If you care at all about our Veterans, please try to be there!! Thanks!!
P.S. Here is a link to a story about Highland Drive that you might like to read.

Good use of your list, Nikki. I am betting no one minds in the least.
The story you linked says nothing of the hospital being closed, just a new policy of not letting patients go outside, due to a death of a wandering patient.
Good luck and good hunting.
BTTT
Best of Luck tomorrow!!!
Our Veterans deserve the best!
Thanks Nikki!
And I absolutely don't mind...this is a good thing!
Where are the nearest VA Hospitals? Bed size - specialties, etc.
Here in Arkansas we have TWO Va hospitals, but both are in Little Rock. But, we have an excellent VA clinic here in Hot springs for check ups, ilness, minor injuries, etc. The clinics are spread around the larger towns in the state. Much cheaper, much more efficient.
If I need medication from the VA, it is mailed from Little Rock (for long term meds) For a short term (3 days), the VA buys them from a local pharmacy.
I have no more complaints about the VA than I ever had about military doctors in general. In fact, the VA is better than active duty doctors/hospitals ever were.
I would like to see them all closed.
Send the vets to REAL hospitols.
BUMP
I know that story isn't about the closing, that was announced when the CARES committee gave it's report. I posted that story because it shows some of the things that our Veterans have to live with because there isn't always enough help and I'm sorry, but that is just not good enough!! We're closing VA's, but this is the kind of treatment that some of our Veterans receive....we've got to show that we care about these closings and that we care about the treatment that all of our Veterans receive!!

I just spent a few hours today on the air trying to explain most of the blatant LIES that the left wing has been spouting the past few years about Bush and the mostly NON-EXISTANT VA money cuts!
I even had a group of vets today who swore that the SGLI had been cut from $10,000 to $6,000 (but they kept calling it "death benefits") This was the old trick of comparing apples to oranges.
The "Death Benefit" is a Social Security function it used to be $250 years ago - now it's up to ???
SGLI was $10,000 but now up to $250,000 AND they added spousal coverage & kids too!!

The left-wing radicals have succeeded in BRAINWASHING the majority of Americans - including conservatives - that the Bush administration is killing vets, starving them, forcing them to live in concrete bunkers (un-airconditioned!) not allowing wounded vets to be treated in military hospitals -- etc etc etc.
I have challenged if anyone can show one REAL cut in anything! Nobody has succeeded yet!
Are all VA hospitals good? NO! Are all hospitals good? NO!
If anybody wants to do something POSITIVE, I would suggest volunteering - watch and listen and keep REAL ISSUES out in the open by writing the newspapers, calling talk shows, speaking to others.
But tell only the TRUTH that you can prove - do not pass rumors and innuendos created by the anti-American left-wing radicals.
Your VA hospital is a local issue, but find out what they plan to do and how & where they will treat patients before you start picketing. It could be better!
Nikki,
Not to be a party pooper, but you really should target your pings. For example, I live in ten hours away in North Carolina and won't exactly be able to stop by on my way to or from work tomorrow.
Good luck with your vigil.
And who knows maybe you were going to be in the area and could make it.
Bumping for a worthy cause!
Just to clarify....I never said that anyone was picketing, or that this was a rally, I said this was a "Vigil". I know that there are certain VA hospitals are closing and I also know what the plans are for here in Pittsburgh. I've followed this story very closely and I also have talked to Secretary Principi myself. What I said was that we have to show are "elected officials" that we care about these issues and that we are watching them very closely...it will be my generation that has to fix all of the mistakes that they make and I want to make sure that our Veterans and our troops coming home today are taken care of properly!!! I NEVER, EVER said that this had anything to do with President Bush ( http://www.nikkiusa.com/nikki-bush04.jpg )or cuts, or budgets or anything like that! I said we need to show that we care about the decisions that are being made!! I may not be old enough to vote yet, but I think that I've got my facts pretty straight and I want our politicians to know that I'm watching what they are doing, I care and that I am not afraid to stand up and tell them when I think that something is wrong!!! I'm sorry if you took my post the wrong way, but this is not a protest or picket or rally, this is a Vigil for our VA's.
Thanks!!
