The Democrats: They’re No Fun Anymore
RightGoths.Com ^ | July 21, 2004 | Ivan Groznii

It’s a popular perception that the Democrats are fun and the Republicans aren’t. If one thinks of the word “Democrat” or “liberal” in relation to the subject of personal enjoyment, it’s a popular idea that they are the way far out hippie crowd that are sunning themselves on college campuses with scantily clad maidens who have flowers woven through their hair, while they’re smoking enough pot to comprise the marijuana output of a small 3rd world nation. Democrats appear on MTV and are by and large the beneficiaries of “rock the vote” events. Democrats get to go on the cover of Rolling Stone; albeit, they may look ridiculous, as Al Gore did.

In contrast, Republicans and conservatives are perceived as staid, puritanical and stern. To be conservative is to be moral, to go to church, to be righteous. Republicans rarely appear in the trendy magazines; rather, they have to create their own publications to be seen at all, unless of course, one is a “maverick” (i.e., supports the Democrats frequently) like John McCain. In the popular mind, the Republicans are spinach to the Democrats’ ice cream. It may be better for you, but hardly fun.

But like many popular perceptions, this is inaccurate on an almost Orwellian scale. Indeed, if the Democrats were any fun whatsoever, they certainly aren’t anymore.

The Democrats have absolutely no sense of humour. For example, recently, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger happened to make a remark at a political event that his opponents were “girly men”. This remark has its basis in an internationally famous Saturday Night Live sketch in which two body builders promise to “pump you up” and criticise anyone who doesn’t want to as being “girly men”. No one objected to the sketch when it was broadcast, so Governor Schwarzenegger probably thought it would inject a bit of levity.

However the response from the Democrats has been nothing short of apopletic:

Bob Mullholland, campaign adviser to the California Democrats: "I've always considered him a jerk, and this has reinforced that. He's stooped to a ninth-grade level; He's a juvenile boy with steroid muscles who has never really adjusted to being an elected official."

Shiela Kuehl, Democrat state senator: "The 'Kindergarten Cop' turned into a kindergartner…(it was) homophobic, an insult, ill-educated and old-fashioned."

Mark Leno, State Assemblyman: "It's interesting that he uses the female gender, girlie men, as a pejorative insult…He owes Californians an apology because instead of focusing on the real business at hand - passing the budget - he's campaigning against Democrats. We need leadership, not partisan warfare."

For the moment, leave aside the hypocrisy of Democrats getting bent out of shape over a single remark in comparison to their silence over Whoopie Goldberg’s Way More Than 2 Minutes Hate for George W. Bush. It is indeed obvious the Democrats cannot withstand the slightest bit of humour at their expense. Presumably it would have been less offensive for the Governor to call them bloodsucking leeches, parasites on the hard working public. But then again some Invertebrate Anti-Defamation League probably would object to innocent leeches being compared to Democrats.

Well, I can't say that I mind having their votes, but I am a Christian conservative myself and STRONGLY disapprove of the "gothic" lifestyle.

Arnold made a joke and the Democrats got offended. Hey, if its a joke either ignore it or laugh with it. If you go ballistic, people think the satire fits. And the Democrats have shown that they can't take being ridiculed well. This from the same folks who think nothing of lampooning Republicans with bathroom humor. Go figure.

I wouldn't say the "goth" lifestyle runs to my tastes but in America people can be individuals. Its the Democrats who want to herd us all into an enforced Soviet-style collective conformity.

Well worth reading. Isn't it interesting that Al Franken, Janeane Garafalo, Whoopi Goldberg, etc became famous as comedians. There is no humor in them these days.

The Democrats, really, are boring. They’re killjoys and prigs. Forget your girlfriend wearing the rubber catsuit at the weekend, materials it’s made of harms the environment. Forget that beer, it’s bad for you and the company probably makes contributions to the Republican Party. Forget smoking. Forget laughing at anything except Republicans. By adhering to a creed in which the personal is political, the Democrats have meant that sheer, unalloyed bliss is alien to them, because everything and anything has political content rather than is merely an exercise of individual preferences. It is perhaps justice of a sort that in their attempts to suppress liberty, whether it is in economic or personal choices (i.e., what to drink or smoke), the Democrats have made themselves unable to be free to really enjoy themselves.

But credit where credit is due. The biggest joke of the 2004 political season does belong to them: John Kerry.

The Lurch doesn't exactly look like he could tell jokes. John F*ckin's so serious he leaves people bored. Now there's a joke Democrats are unable to appreciate: a candidate bereft of humor.

Other than wearing a lot of black, what is the "gothic" lifestyle?

Kerry was going to visit the Catholic National Cathedral outside Washington as part of his campaign. Kerry's campaign manager made a visit to the Cardinal and said to him, "We've been getting a lot of bad publicity among Catholics because of Kerry's position on abortion and the like. We'd gladly make a contribution to the church of $100,000 if during your sermon you'd say John Kerry is a saint." The Cardinal thinks it over for a moment and agrees to do it.

Kerry shows up, and as the Mass progresses the Cardinal begins his homily. "John Kerry is petty, a self absorbed hypocrite and a nit-wit. He is a liar, a cheat, and a thief. He is the worst example of a Catholic I've ever personally known.

But compared to Ted Kennedy, John Kerry is a saint."

Well, hell, I'm gothic and I'm accepting of you... kind of embarassing for you to be out-christianed by a non-christian, huh?

I don't think there is such a thing as a monolithic gothic lifestyle. That's half the point of it. It's really just an aesthetic thing, for people who really like Halloween.

My knowledge of goth extends mostly to that Saturday Night Live series of sketches.
