Today an individual time trial up the infamous l'Alpe d'Huez.
Ullrich 1 second behind at the first time check.

Fans are real hazard at the bottom, one just shoved Ullrich and almost toppled him. Let's pray Lance gets through safely.
It's the Tour de France The winner wears yellow.
Verenque is through 9.5 KM over 1 minute ahead of the closest time, he is flying. Basso is on course, Armstrong is at the start.

MY mistake ..Verenque is ONE MINUTE BEHIND at 9.5 KM ... I'm a doof.
No following it on Cycling news. Lance is now on course.
I'm on the TdF site - They have Lance 4 seconds off the pace at the first time check (which means nothing as this is where the climb starts...)
Basso, Ulrich climbing strong. Armstrong sprinting to the first climb.
Back in May; he practiced this particular climb four time - in one day!!!
Lance is 2 seconds behind Ullrich, 1 Sec ahead of Basso at 1.5KM , now starting the climb.

Lance took a beating by the fans on the lower part of the course, but has made it through ok.
Basso looks to be climbing fast as does Ullrich.
No, not that much money. I believe that first prize for the overall winner is 400,000 euros. There are additional smaller prizes (e.g., money for each stage win, etc.) at stake as well. Typically, the money that each team wins over the course of the three weeks (including the overall winner's prize) is thrown into the hopper and divvied up among the entire team (including, I believe, shares to the team mechanics, soigneurs, etc., although those shares would be smaller than those given to the riders themselves).
4:58 p.m. - Armstrong is off
4:59 p.m. - Basso hits the 1.5 time check at 2:06 - 13th best
5:00 p.m. - Armstrong comes through the 1.5 time check in ninth place at 2:05
5:01 p.m. - Up on top, the Russian Vladimir Karpets finishes with the day's third-best time so far.
5:03 p.m. -Armstrong is pounding his way up the climb with that signature zippy cadence of his. The crowds are massive.
Basso has lost 20 Sec to Armstrong already according to Cycling news. Lance is charging hard today. Times at 9.5 KM should be interesting.
